Jobs...what do you want for your own kids...

As an extension to my other post…parents would you restrict your child from doing certain noble jobs becuase you felt they werent safe or profitable?..

A servicemen is surely better than an investment banker but how many parents encourage jobs where helping people is a requirement…
A doctor is only good cos its got cash and its something to boast about to other families…helping people is a minor aspect…

One of my friends needs to marry his girlfriend and hes having to revolve his job aspirations due to what suits his family and also her families expectations…he wanted to be a schoolteacher but now hes got his unconditional to do operations in an investment bank…he decided on that cos her family are more likely to accept him and his family coul;dnt understand why a guy at a good university would think of doing something like a schoolteacher…

Iv got similar attitudes but not from my family…it helps that iv already exceeded expectation…but many would feel it silly if i was to become a teacher or social worker…i could probably get away with it as long as i do a phd which would give me a Dr next to my name lol…

But yeah what is the fascination with certain jobs…its like a commercial lawyer who defends all the dickheads in the world by upholding patents etc is seen as better by his own family and prospective inlaws than a guy who is a schoolteacher or social worker…i find it amusing that doing something good will probably work against me especially after seeing this girls family with my friend…

Do any of you have the same demands of your kids?..and also are there any of you who have decided not to do something you wanted to do to appease family members or prospective inlaws…

Re: Jobs...what do you want for your own kids...

I want my boys to persue whatever career they will enjoy. Forcing them into a career thats not of their own choice is a recipe for a lifetime of stress and unhappiness. Of course, there are certain careers I'd LIKE to see them in over others but I'll not force the issue. I will step in if a choice seems unsuitable, like if one wanted to be a movie star but had no talent. Otherwise, I'll just provide guidance and support.

Re: Jobs...what do you want for your own kids...

Well Hubz and i have already agreed that we'll give her the best start we can with private schools etc so she has choices but ultimately she'll decide what she wants to do. Ive seen enuff parents trying to live out their dreams thru their kids and its just not right. U cant live out ur dreams thru ur kids by forcing them to have a career they dont want to do. Thats just sad. They have to make their own choices but u can guide them.

Helping people is a huge aspect for many doctors.

Re: Jobs...what do you want for your own kids...

I think asll we can do is show our kids what options they have.. mostly i think kids kinda look upto what their parents are doing. But yes ultimately i will let them decide. I didn't like when my parents got upset that i am becoming an engineer (well the whole khandaan had loads to say to me) and instead i decided to pursue maths degree. I love math, its abstract, fun and you can make up crap and no one can argue with you :D

but yeah i will like my kids to have the same freedom coz that really helps.. :D

Re: Jobs...what do you want for your own kids...

I agree. Ofcourse there are doctors who are all ego and want the money. But it's sad that it's become the common perception now. For my kids, I want whatever makes them happy. I'd never push them or even sway them in any direction. Most importantly I want them to have a University or beyond education, even if it's in arts or philosophy. I just want them to be inquisitive and well rounded people.

Re: Jobs...what do you want for your own kids...

THat is very true...

Re: Jobs...what do you want for your own kids...

In terms of the doctor is that actually how its judged...or is it just something to boast about and the fact that it makes a lot of money...
I mean i dont see the same respect being given to a fireman who puts his life at risk to help people...

Re: Jobs...what do you want for your own kids...

i would leave my kids to decide on their own :)
or maybe their father could do this thinking paret for them cheers

Re: Jobs...what do you want for your own kids...

whatever they would want to be. as long as it is human services and ethical and involves seeking knowledge and improving the planet's condition. example: doctor, lawyer, teacher, engineer, researcher, writer, musician, or an artist

economically. they i would hope at least maintain the status that i have.
