Ive come across a multitude of young professionals with advanced degree’s and work experience who immigrated from Pakistan to Canada. These individuals are now either without jobs or working in unskilled labor jobs.
Typical cases are individuals with foreign engineering/medical degree’s working in/as:
Meat Packing Industry
Security Guards
Gas Stations/Utility Stores
Additionally, I have come across graduates from Canadian universities stuck in the same situation. Finally, individuals with professional/skilled jobs are underpaid compared to their US counterparts.
So, here’s the question: How bad is it in Canada, from a career/ROI prespective?

Your assessment is true in general. There are lot of well qualified people from all over the world chasing these quality jobs. There are a lot of service jobs in the industries you have mentioned and then there are some individuals who have successfully landed jobs in their area of expertise. Generally speaking based on Pakistani education and experience it is quite tough to land a job of your choice.
if you are in the engineering field, especially with a chemical (process), mechanical or instrumentation background then you can easily find a job in alberta (edmonton, calgary) easier than you could elsewhere in canada. i know for a fact that epc companies are hiring people from pakistan/india directly or ones who have just landed here...this was the situation at the last company i worked at and basically everywhere else. there is no shortage of skilled engineering jobs in alberta. granted of course it is not guaranteed that you will get a job, but the chances are significantly better
