Job search

I graduated with B.E. in Computer Engineering in May, 2003. I haven’t got a job since then. Same is true for most of my Comp. Eng. major friends, while others have started their masters studies. I want some suggestions that if I don’t get a job in IT industry, what are my next options (jobs related to computer skills, etc.) I mean I don’t want to start a job which just requires a high school diploma, when I am more qualified for that position. Rather than not doing anything, I will be at least earning some. Thanks.

Other than getting a job in ur networking field try getting a job with some ISP. It doesn't even have to be in an IT position. It could be sales or whatever. But as long as ur connected to it u'll learn the goods and bads of our field. Plus u can always pop in the NOC office to see what they are doing, and if ur socially skillfull they might even teach u a thing or 2.

Is this in Pakistan or in the US? let me know and I will give you some relevant tips.

I am in US

Oh, in that case try temp agencies. Its a tough time to be graduating with a IT degree. Currently there maybe shortages of IT jobs but there are lots of contract jobs. Also, see if you can hook up with one of those local computer sales places (most of them are Orientals), tell them you will do some stuff for them for free if they would refer you when somebody asks them for little projects, even to setup computers at home. These days families have multiple PCs at home and 1 broadband connections, so you can network those things. Where are u located? I maybe able to give you some pointers if in the NY area.

Couple of issues to ask:
Are you an immigrant or citizen here? If you are then you should definately have some luck working working through headhunters on the IT side cause they can use you for projects.

Give some idea of skills and levels of proficency

Also have you tried Dice.com to search for basic programming jobs. Apply to capital one. Also check your school and see if they need people to program web pages or do some other technical stuff at one of the departments. yes it wont pay you much it makes for good experience and resume filler during these times.

More tips later on in the week. please remind me if i dont remember.

TofiBaba, thanks for the suggestions. I will sure look into contract jobs and find more about them. and I am located in NJ, nearby NYC area.

hmcq, yes now I am a citizen here. My exposure have been more towards networking and Unix Admin and less toward programming, as I didn't have any internship which requires programming. and my GPA is not bad. I will check Dice.com, though. I checked with the school and they told me they prefer to hire enrolled students. Since I do not have any certification, so current I am preparing for UNIX sun solaris Admin exam. Do you think it's a good idea, or should I study for other exam, or improve my programming skills? Thanks.
