Things in Canada seem to be going okay. Employment #'s have gone up and the unemployment rate has decreased as reported by statscan (Nov 2016).
Personally I think networking and meeting the right people is really important. Almost all the jobs I’ve had including part-time work while I was at uni up till now as a professional was through a connection or networking. I agree with the other posters that indicate the importance of being a team player and being a natural fit to the organization’s culture and vision is also a desired trait of a new hire. Always good to have other interests/hobbies/volunteering that will set you a part from the rest of the applicants.

If and when the housing bubble bursts in Toronto and Vancouver things can get pretty ugly pretty fast. During the previous recession, I promised myself that I will be the most educated person in my profession and completed every related course offered and also completed many personal development courses. I tell my staff that every day take a few minutes to improve yourself, read a bit about your industry and profession and soon you will be greatly valued. My advice is to keep increasing the value you bring to a corporation by taking all the courses, certifications and attending the seminars and reading about your industry.
