Job market changing?

How are the job markets around you changing?

Can you still used the same old tactics to win new opportunities ? if not, then what are some of the new things you are trying out?

Re: Job market changing?

When I look at the desi resumes I mostly see I went to school and the end. Normally we would like to see community involvements, leadership skills, sports, and travel. Soft skills are becoming very important. Your physiology and the way you stand, sit, talk and facial expressions are really important. Most companies will prefer a team player and well-mannered person over someone who is very skilled and awkward.

Re: Job market changing?

I am sure you are being humble, it really is very easy to acquire the soft skills. People just need to watch a few videos. Words account for only 7 percent of the communication and most of the message is delivered by physiology like how we stand, walk, sit, how fast we move and hand gestures. I am in a bit of a pickle as I am having to deal with the Indian mortgage brokers and between being highly emotional, over sensitive and having huge egoes and lack of integrity I am having a hard time picking a favorite. My biggest pet peeve is inconsitency, this girl who I helped a lot was really great in the beginning but just slacked off and is being bit unprofessional. I will do a thread on why many Indian ladies are not that committed to their careers.

Re: Job market changing?

I agree with most of what you said with regards to communication and the way we come across . I do think sometimes , why some of the directors , even in bigger , sophisticated firms start dressing shabby and weird body language , so arrogant and almost lose their ability to come across friendly or even lose that "click" factor.

I am sure at some point in their career , they would have been trying their best to have that "likability" factor in them and smiles on their faces and that creed sophistication ..

Re: Job market changing?

now why would you stereotype Indian women?
Beats me !

I think personal circumstances are more important for so many people with multiple responsibilities . Sometimes when it comes to career v/s other important responsibilities , its ok to give priority to the family , home etc and come back to the career when the time is right. That definitely doesn't mean someone's commitment to career is under question .

However , its imperative that one remains professional in what ever they are doing and continue to make an effort to make themselves better at it.

Re: Job market changing?

I think Economy is improving all around the world.

In US things are very unpredictable and markets are not as bully as anticipated. But some job growth is seen.

How is BREXIT making an impact on UK, Cb?

Re: Job market changing?

These guys can change like a chameleon and will play the friendly, well dressed and congenial part when needed. Also depends on corporate culture. In case of minorities, we have to be consistently flawless. I am sifting thru a lot of desi mortgage brokers right now and although they are mostly accommodating and very hard working but severely lack in professionalism. They seriously need training in business etiquettes. I was promoting this Indian broker recently, she was tall, skinny, drove a beamer etc modern enough to sport a skirt and then I invited her to sit in my showhome one weekend, she came with oily messy hair and hadn't used deodorant in armpits. When I used to invite my friend blondie Adrianne to sit in the showhome she would present herself meticulously and every time,

@Chickenbiryanni

Attitudes in life have a very strong cultural and environmental influence, just dealing with my Indian brokers and even looking at my own home desi women have this deep down belief that it is the man's responsibility to provide and if they are working it is more like a favor to the husband. Yesterday I was interviewing the best Indian broker Manisha and she casually says that she doesn't need the money and she does this only because she likes it, well then maybe she should not get paid. On the other hand the white broker Lori who I know is a multimillionaire has never mentioned how she is so rich and it is a favor to mankind that she is working.

Re: Job market changing?

Things in Canada seem to be going okay. Employment #'s have gone up and the unemployment rate has decreased as reported by statscan (Nov 2016).

Personally I think networking and meeting the right people is really important. Almost all the jobs I've had including part-time work while I was at uni up till now as a professional was through a connection or networking. I agree with the other posters that indicate the importance of being a team player and being a natural fit to the organization's culture and vision is also a desired trait of a new hire. Always good to have other interests/hobbies/volunteering that will set you a part from the rest of the applicants.

Re: Job market changing?

If and when the housing bubble bursts in Toronto and Vancouver things can get pretty ugly pretty fast. During the previous recession, I promised myself that I will be the most educated person in my profession and completed every related course offered and also completed many personal development courses. I tell my staff that every day take a few minutes to improve yourself, read a bit about your industry and profession and soon you will be greatly valued. My advice is to keep increasing the value you bring to a corporation by taking all the courses, certifications and attending the seminars and reading about your industry.

Re: Job market changing?

Job market is not changing! Jobs are simply vanishing. In future jobs will only be for highly skilled and extremely intelligent people.

Re: Job market changing?

The economy is not as good as it used to be before the vote. Job marketing is declining here.

Re: Job market changing?

Brexit so far is causing other hiccups . Job market has been pretty slow even before Brexit was on the Horizon. I think its the over all slump we are seeing in industries like manufacturing and industry . Its not the same as it was just a few years ago.

Re: Job market changing?

Very sound advice indeed . Well said
