Other then just applying to positions online , what are the creative yet effective ways of looking for a job?
Re: Job Hunting Techniques ...
Enhance your CV and profile.
Re: Job Hunting Techniques ...
good thread Aimee, i'd like to know too :)
Re: Job Hunting Techniques ...
Know your target Position....
Be there when you are required to be there...
Keep your resume up2date and keep posting cv (give interviews ) know your worth always.
Where exactly are you looking for ? ( in which country ? )
Re: Job Hunting Techniques ...
Nauman , I am not looking for myself , but I have opened this thread for the knowledge of many many individuals out there who remain confused about the job hunting process.
here is my take on this topic:
Apply online to as many positions as possible. Websites like Reed, monster, Bayt etc ...
Speculative applications : have you occasionally liked a company alot or heard much good stuff about any of them? perhaps you should send in a speculative application .. normally good CV's go into their database and when they need new staff they look at those applications.
got friends working in larger companies? why not request them to recommend you. Alot of times companies have internal Referal schemes .. they ask their employees to refer candidates to them as a first port of call to fill a certain role.
Get yourself registered with the three top recruiters in your field .. and make sure you meet them and give them a call once every two months to check if anything new is happening in the market.
Become part of social networking sites like linked.com ... they really really help in spreading one's professional network
Look for job fairs ... most large companies send their HR representatives to job fairs and it might help tonns if you get to meet them and leave a lasting impression.
Dont forget to browse through the careers websites of the large companies. The jobs change on a day to day basis and you dont want to lose out on good opportunities ..
Newspapers .. due to the tight economy , alot of businesses are turning to money saving techniques in order to reduce recruitment budgets and you will be surprised how many of them advertise quality jobs in classified section! ... so do look at them.
Always read the business section in the papers .. in job hunting every bit of intelligence will help you ... When large conglomerates are opening new sites or moving large numbers of people to new offices they announce such stuff in papers and that is a good lead that there will be some hussle and bussle on the recruitment front. Drop your resume in.
finally, create your own spreadsheet, when you apply to a company of your choice, dont forget that they have competitors that you can approach as well ... write the names down in a spreadsheet and chase them up occasionally or keep sending in your resume every now and then to them .. for example , motorola and others in the same field will be nokia, samsung etc ...
Re: Job Hunting Techniques …
A great CV is like a primary weapon for a hunter but dont rely on it completely.
If you have been employed previously try and get references and acredations it may seem an old fashioned method but all hunters know that techniques that are old and continue to be used must the most effective.
Know your quarry, try and find about as much as you can with regards to background of the companies you intend to work for… when looking for vacancies try and ascertain as much as you can about the job role… knowing this little extra about the company will stand you in good stead should you have to attend an interview.
When looking for jobs, consider the competition and what you have that can help… life skills are very usefull as well as usefull key words dropped into your CV and interview brief… try and mention things like: Teamwork and Competance… back it up with any relevant qualifications you may have or even if you lack the qualifications give examples.
When going in for an Interview it’s important to not only dress well but carry yourself in a way that suggests calmness and confidence try not to stutter or flutter your hands… carry any paperwork with you in a smart breifcase or other carrier and make sure it has seperate pockets which you can access quicly when drawing out or placing in documents.
When looking for a Job dont just sit behind a screen and apply to be honest it’s easy but also very difficuilt to influence things in your favour… i have literally had to hunt down many jobs and worn down several good pairs of boots while lining and marching between one job que and another.
Depending on which sector you intend to pursue your career set yourself a plan of what you want…
Dont get suckered into contracts you will regret later… Dont be too cocky and assume you know it all… sometimes acting a little humble can also go down well with an egotistic boss… ![]()
Don’t be tempted to copy and paste online CV guides, sure use them as rough guidlines but try to make your resume as unique and thourough as possible.
Study your material long and hard… try and get to know as many ins and outs as you can… if you can expand your knowledge it will help you gain rapid promotion becuase companies like individuals with good spirit and co-ordination.
Competance comes with experience so try and gain as much practice as possible i have often worked some small jobs without taking any pay… just so that i can learn a skill which enables me to later dictate my own rate… consider the philosophical principle of feeding a man a fish and teaching him to fish…
Finally i’d like to wish you all the best with your hunt for a job, may it be most rewarding for you.
If theres anything else you need to know dont hessitate to ask where all here to help… if you need anything me you can PM me. :k:

wow comprehensive
Re: Job Hunting Techniques ...
Send unsolicited letter to the top person of the company.
Using that tick I got interview and help in finding job from those people. You would be surprised to know how many people are craving to tell a story to other how they helped some random person help succeed in life.
Try this what are you going to lose. It is not that they have time to black list you from your company. Right ?

Re: Job Hunting Techniques ...
Very nice video posted by Shamraz ... A plan is the key to achieving success at job hunting.
One of the important things to keep in mind, its very important to say it clearly that you are looking for a job. Asking for help directly really gets you somewhere rather then going round and round like a jalebi which makes others lose interest in your conversations.
Personally As a headhunter , I have always felt more inclined to help those who are open and frank about the fact that they are looking for a job. They dont get scared of "asking" for it. The potential employer also softens up quicker when you say it more openly. Though you must remember that there is a difference between stating your motive clearly and begging. Many just resort to saying it again and again which kills the tact... while others dont say it out of ego which keeps the other person guessing and you might lose out on a good opportunity.

Re: Job Hunting Techniques ...
Man! You can just scratch the top of the barrel when job hunting with above ^ pointers and I like all of them.
However while its important to follow ^ All of the above, your personal profile has to have some 'weight' as well.
You have to have a selling personality, and when you do get the opportunity and come face to face with your prospect, put on your best manners, business attire, and thorough knowledge of your would be employer
This way mostly half of your duel is won! For the rest pay extra ordinary attention to details related to the 'demand' and what you have to offer.
Last but not the least, listen and pay attention to the questions, be direct and DO NOT say something to OPEN more questionings from the interviewer.
However I would not suggest to randomly send out CVs unless a mega corporation is involved in which case its ok to have your Fresh Cv into their database, and to follow up make sure you keep sending out your updated profile changes such as addition to your qualification or some new training course you have recently completed. Most of the HR staffs are very keen to see such commitments and they do notice such CVs and they do like to meet you when its needed. See! They (HR staff) have to do their job nicely as well for their bosses.
my 2 cents!
Good Luck!
Re: Job Hunting Techniques ...
If you have to relive the last 10 years of your life, what would you like to do?
What's the purpose of this question? and what's the best reply?
Re: Job Hunting Techniques ...
Mostar , this question will give the interviewer an insight into :
1- how self aware you are
2- Do you accept that you may have made mistakes
3- Do you know how to rectify them or do you have the will power to better yourself
4- skills that need development
For example: If I answer it this way:
"Looking back at my career , I feel I moved around abit too much in jobs .. Which I believe I would have changed would 10 years of my life were to be relived by me ... however since we cant change the past , I am planning to make my future better and will ensure longer term stability in my future jobs "

Thanks.
