Job-hunting in Canada

What is the best way to find a job in Canada? Head-hunters and recruitment agencies? How effective are they?

And how is the job market nowadays?

With the field of work I’d prefer, one has to be a Canadian citizen, so I have met a bit of a stumbling block in terms of finding a government job or internship. So I’m keeping my options open now, and willing to expand into anything at this stage.

I’d be greatful for advice and opinions, as well as weblinks.

(I plan to move within the next 2 months)

Thanks.

Re: Job-hunting in Canada

North America is not the land of opportunity anymore…why do you wanna come to this freezing part of the world where the land and people both are cold.
Email me your resume (not in Japanese)…if everything fails I’ll hire you but I can only pay $5/hr. Where do you wanna work..Toronto/Ottawa/ Vancouver?
Try workoplis.com or monster.ca for starters

Re: Job-hunting in Canada

I thought Canadians were warm and friendly! I'll email my resume in Zulu...how's that eh? ;)

Ontario area...preferably Toronto or Ottawa.

and no, I shan't be your secretary!!

will check the websites. thanks :)

Re: Job-hunting in Canada

Chup oye… we all know yer cold, but hey all Torontonians here are kewl… Cats, you can count on us for any help you need when you come down.

Anyways, if I remember correctly, your area is International Relations (??), so you’re prolly gonna look for a job in the public sector? What else would you be interested in?
based on your preferences, I could certainly post some sites here that my be of help.

Also, when you say you’re going to be moving, you’d be arriving as a Landed Immigrant right ??
In that case, you can most certainly apply for Govt. jobs.

Here’s the website for the Public Service Commission of Canada – it’s the central jobs site for all Federal jobs: http://www.jobs-emplois.gc.ca

Similarly, here’s the Provincial Govt. of Ontario’s Job Site: http://www.gojobs.gov.on.ca

You can also search employment opportunities online with the Globe & Mail at:
http://globecareers.workopolis.com/index.html
(this is affiliated with the Workopolis site that fayz mentioned before).

Monster.ca is good, and so is http://www.jobshark.ca

I can give more details once you gimme something more to work with. I’ve worked with the Ontario Govt. at Queen’s Park, and also in the Private Sector and currently in Academia… so hopefully, I can help.
Ciao.

Re: Job-hunting in Canada

Umar Talibb thanks soo much!!! Will check those websites soon. Yes my field is IR, writing up my thesis and want to jet off to Canada as soon as its been handed in.

When I tried to look for internships and opportunities in the government they stated in a few places that they give preference to citizens and in extreme cases consider permanent residents and others. Also, they give preference to graduates from Canadian universities.

Anyhow I wont give up, and yes the public sector is the most desirable for me. I’m also looking into CIDA.

I’ll send my CV over to you as well. I’ve been told it needs some work, so let me polish it up a bit before I send it through.

Re: Job-hunting in Canada

Job hunting in Canada is tuff. It’s not easy to find a job. I am a Canadian Citizen and got education from Canada and still had job after a long period of time. so, you can imagine by that.
Email me your resume and I will give you more advice where you can find a job. [email=“[email protected]”][email protected]

When you are moving to Toronto. Try registering for agencies. First apply directly to companies and if you don’t hear anything from them, take up a temporary work with agencies. Atleast to get some money in the pocket.

Send me your resume and in which sector you are looking a job. thanks.
Some useful websites:

www.monster.ca
www.jobbank.ca

Re: Job-hunting in Canada

welcome to canada :flower1:
nothing much except what Talib has already mentioned above.
I cant offer any specific suggestions as my field is entirely different
There are ups and downs in the job market - You will eventually find something
Most important of all you need NETWORKING & a canadian ishtyle resume ( which is quite stupid in my opinion )

Re: Job-hunting in Canada

Hi Catty,

Don’t listen to the above,it’s just his opinion.:bukbuk:
I beg to differ,I think North America is still by far the best land of opportunity and would recommend you apply to the USA as well cos to be honest with you it is still the most opportune country in the world.
I wanna go there myself from here in Toronto as soon as I can afford to relocate.
It has a better economy, standard of living and better prospects than Canada.
Besides it has some nice warm areas unlike here in Canada, unless you wanna go to rainy Vancouver BC.
It is difficult to find the work you want straightaway and you will have to do something else(agency work) til you get what you want.
Believe me you will get the job you want if you’re patient enough to wait and willing to make the right sacrifices.Good luck and never ever give up!

Regards.

Re: Job-hunting in Canada

Thanks everyone.

Mr Bhaand, after looking at a few resumes online, I realised I had to make drastic changes to mine, esp after DM and Fayz had a look. Fayz is still making fun of it, but atleast its an improvement. :)

Nad, your very first post and its in reply to my thread. lol Thanks for the opinion. For the meantime I am only looking to Canada, and will expand after I've made my base there. InshAllah I will find something and goodluck with your job hunting as well! :)

Smoothie, Ill email you my resume as well.
