Yiu dint have to use the word salary. You can always say that based on your research, you feel that your current compensation package is not competitive.

Another way of doing it is to get an offer from another company, and get a counter offer from your company. If they are willing to keep you, they will match the offer, or you leave

I will disagree with the last part, research and find out salary ranges and use that, plus value you bring etc is fine. It murky waters if you tell them to match some offer. They may do it then, because they can’t afford to lose you right away, but can then get rid of you later. Look at stats on percentage of ppl who leave or are fired within 2 years of accepting a counter offer by their company.
