So I have been working at the same company for the past 2 years and have advanced a lot in terms of responsibilities. All new team members are dependent on my training. I do feel i deserve a salary rise and i have been interviewing else for similar or junior role for almost £10k more.
The issue is, I love my company and the colleagues as well as the work although i want to d more advanced level work at this point. I am only unhappy about the salary.
After being boosted an ex colleague, i finally raised the guts to speak to my manager about it.
But in meeting, I could only manage to say i was unhappy with the workload and was getting bored. I continued to say I wanted more high level tasks and I wanted to let him(manager) know that i was unhappy before shocking him and leaving the team. I very subtly mentioned that i have been looking around at opportunities and i could get a much higher packages. He did not react to this so i didn’t directly ask for a salary rise. I am not sure if he got the message because all he concluded was that he also feel i am capable of doing more and will arrange for me to work on higher level projects. I am unsure he will raise this with the director.
Was i not obvious? My ex colleague says I need to be blunt and ask for it because it is much easier for a company to raise salaries than moving me to a different/higher role.
I feel so awkward asking for a salary raise that i’d rather move to another company.
Should I try my luck with my current employer and then only look at different companies?
I really don’t want to leave this company.
How would you tackle the salary rise issue?
Yiu dint have to use the word salary. You can always say that based on your research, you feel that your current compensation package is not competitive.
Another way of doing it is to get an offer from another company, and get a counter offer from your company. If they are willing to keep you, they will match the offer, or you leave
Yaar if you are really that capable then go and find food in fresh waters . Why are you so stuck with your current company??? Means we don't go to jobs because they are our relatives, we go their because they pay us. Plus new place will have new challenges and new opportunities that will help you grow . Usually job hopping is the best way to get a raise that your current employer can't do for you.
You behaved like that guy who said to his boss: " Tankhwa baraho warna"
Boss asked " Warna kia?" in angry tone.
The guys said " warna isee tankhwa per karm karoon ga."

I will disagree with the last part, research and find out salary ranges and use that, plus value you bring etc is fine. It murky waters if you tell them to match some offer. They may do it then, because they can't afford to lose you right away, but can then get rid of you later. Look at stats on percentage of ppl who leave or are fired within 2 years of accepting a counter offer by their company.
There are only two ways of getting a raise.
You are in high demand , the company realizes this and keeps you happy by keeping your salary in line with the industry norms.
Second way is to jump the ship.

Yes , I agree , here in the UK , this is a very risky step. Most companies dont like it that you get an offer and expect the employer to match the salary. In many cases , they will not do it. To discourage the practice.
@parisbynight, because you are very happy with every other factor except salary in your current role, the only real option you have is to either ensure your manager promotes you into a higher role , which will ensure a better salary, or you directly ask for a raise.
I think you did put your message across to the manager but you brought in too much of extra stuff which makes it look like the salary isnt as big an issue as you feeling unchallenged in your job. No matter how much you feel uncomfortable asking for a raise directly, you will have to do it.
Please do keep in mind though, every company knows what the market value is for their talent. The cost of hiring new talent is ok for them coz they know they will get fresh ideas , varied experience etc. But what many of them will not value or refuse to give in to, is the fact that employees start expecting market rates. Only marked A players in a firm get market competitive package. For the rest of them , the companies will always try to save monies by giving a slight raise. That is the reason why most people tend to find a new role rather then asking for a raise again and again.
True that.
Now you will see a new thread asking how to get promoted.
Therefore I am being preemptive and will provide some insights. Getting promoted takes lot of sweat and blood, lot of hard work, lots of out of the box thinking, lots of volunteering , lot of things one has to do to stand out of the crowd.
One does not get promoted just by asking, promotion is earned, promotion is not a right.
100% agreed on above, and I will add, having the right connections.
I have been on the winning side, and I have been on the losing side of promotions. Aside from performance, how the boss views you versus your peer in competition plays a huge role.
Absolutely agreed , getting promoted is much more harder then attaining a senior role in a new organization ! Coz when you are up against someone who is not from the organization , they automatically get the edge over you , most managers tend to think they know their employees so well , they let their decision be based on their SWAT analysis .
But when they are making decisions on external candidates , they are leaving 40% upto chance ! that is why they have the probationary period for them to prove not just through performance but the fit in the team and so many other aspects ..
But that doesnt mean its a bleak picture to get promoted. you try your best, if you get it , brilliant, if not, no worries, you have the world to explore .
