Jinnah's family barely survives in Quaid’s city

This truly shameful.

http://www.nation.com.pk/daily/mar-2006/25/nationalnews9.php

The old man was running frantically towards a public bus, holding flowers in his one hand. He grabbed after some
effort iron bar, jumped on footboard and finally landed in the bus. Exhausted and tired, he was looking disoriented;
after a while he managed to breathe normally, since the bus was full of passengers, he kept standing. Every time it
took any turn, he twisted with the bus. I recognized him instantly: the old frail man was great grand son of Father of
the Nation, Quaid-I-Azam, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Mohammad Aslam Jinnah. Aslam is struggling with life in a city
where his great grand father was born and buried. He makes no complaint as he commutes back and forth in public
transport. This city has more than 1.5 million vehicles; there is none for the poor relatives of Quaid-I-Azam, who
bestowed this nation with every luxury one can imagine.
Aslam ‘s wife is suffering from cancer, she had surgery and she needs medicines worth many thousand every month.
He is self- respecting man; he can never ask for any favour. Hence quietly he lives on the edge with his family in a
two room rented flat in North Nazimabad. The only man who helped this family without asking was Mohammad
Mian Soomro, the Senate Chairman. He arranged for the operation of Aslam’s wife. Mohammad Aslam is poor and
broken relative of Jinnah Family. Some rich fellows refuse to acknowledge their existence and challenge their claim
of Jinnah’s kin. This is wholly unfair and unjustified.
Mohammad Aslam never wants any share in the property left over by Quaid-I-Azam, he just wants to show to the
world he is after material things, and he is content with life. His resources are terribly meager; his family hardly
survives on what he earns. He supplies homemade paper bags to scores of shopkeepers in the old city area, where
his great grand father was born. His wife is sick while daughter is mentally deranged; his sister Khurshid Begum
lives in Golimar neighbourhood. She lost her only son, Sikandar Jinnah, after he was tortured to death in Soldier
Bazaar police station. That death perhaps shook the whole city except Nawaz Sharif and his burly men. After almost
a decade has passed, Khurshid Begum is still struggling to secure justice and bring those policemen to the books
who allegedly murdered her son.
This is tragic and pathetic, every now and then, Jinnah’s family commutes to city court where they ponder on this
case for hours, then another hearing is usually fixed. This happens almost in every hearing no judgement is
expected in the near future. The family pays expenses for travel and stay at the court. They wait and wait and wait
for the justice, which they hope to get in their lifetime.
The only favour, authorities have done to Aslam Jinnah is the provision of a car, which takes his family back and
forth to Quaid’s mausoleum on the national days including 23rd March, 14rh August, 25th December and 11th
September. This is usually an uphill task for Aslam. He goes to protocol department of Sindh Government, books
car for the day and comes back while on his way back he buys flowers to lay on Quaid’s mausoleum When I saw him
last Wednesday, he was going back to his house after buying flowers. On national days, Aslam usually wears black
sherwani; this has become old and wrinkled like his face. He never minds atrocities of life. ‘I accept this as my fate.
I have no regret. One thing is sure I will never ask for any favour from anybody.’ Aslam and his family memebrs
adorn front and back pages of national newspapers and news items on various TV channels. This is the only luxury
this family enjoys, so far.
What can be done for Aslam and his sister Khurshid, who barely survive in this largely brutal and cruel Pakistan,
where those who were deadly against the country minted money and got away with it. Even now the opponents of
Pakistan Ideology thrives well while the Founder’s family suffers silently in agony and pain.
The Governor of Sindh, Dr Ishratul Ibad should find some time from his busy schedule to visit Jinnah’s family. He
has done so much for the neglected poets, writers, journalists and artists. How could he ignore the family, which has
done so much for this country.
The plight of Aslam Jinnah and his sister Khurshid Begum deserve real attention by all. They should not be left to
suffer, mainly because they are poor and helpless. If they will get any justice is anybody’s guess.
Aslam Jinnah ‘s destination had arrived; he stood on footboard for a while. He begged conductor to stop the bus at
bus stop. He smiled, ‘don’t worry Chacha, it will stop.’ The driver merely slowed the bus, Aslam Jinnah quickly
jumped. He staggered for a while but he did not let flowers to drop. Those flowers he laid on Quaid’s mausoleum on
23rd March 2006. Another national day passed by as Jinnah’s family suffers silently. This is their fate, perhaps.

Re: Jinnah's family barely survives in Quaid’s city

Shameful indeed! More so for Jinnah's family though!

The newspaper failed to show how this hardworking gentleman is related to MA Jinnah.

BBC article says he is the descendant from the first wife of Jinnah. The question we should all ask is that Jinnah never took this part of the family along. If MA Jinnah was OK with them living their own life, why it suddenly becomes "shameful" for us?

The second question is why this part of MA Jinnah's family got so poor. MA Jinnah was the richest attorney in Bombay, then why this part of his family never got educated and become experts in the field of law, medicine, or engineering?

Why the man is making homemade paper bags? Why did he not get to school, college, and then university?

I mean there are two many fishy things about this family. But still it looks like some government officials do help them sometimes.

Anyway I hope this hardworking gentleman is following his great-great grand father (Poonja Jinnah) and making sure that their next generation is well educated.

Re: Jinnah's family barely survives in Quaid’s city

The story is not exactly true. Jinnah's family is quite well to do. His only daughter lives in NY. This guy has a false claim of being Jinnah's family.

Re: Jinnah's family barely survives in Quaid’s city

Jinnah's immediate family is prospering in India. His grandson, brother's family etc.

Re: Jinnah's family barely survives in Quaid’s city

Why did Jinnah foresake the descendents through his first wife? Is that why some people say this is a false claim or for some other reason?I mean it would terrible if he is indeed a descendent of Jinnah and in addition to his suffering, you call him a pretender. It should take less than a wek to establish dna

Re: Jinnah’s family barely survives in Quaid’s city

jinnah’s daughter dina ( from his official marriage )married a guy from parsi family which owned businesses in entire india , they own mills , airlines & renowned bombay dying & shipping company , the family name they use is wadia ( see below), they r filthy rich & their young heir , i think his name is ness wadia is quiet famous in bollywood too, jinnah 's daughter dina is still in tiff with indian govt due to her claim for multi million property or a huge state that jinnah left in india .

Re: Jinnah's family barely survives in Quaid’s city

^ what do you mean official marriage? So the heirs in Pakistan or from an affair or something? Or was it a 1st marriage 2nd marriage thing?

Re: Jinnah's family barely survives in Quaid’s city

I believe that he is not a direct progeny of the Quaid. His link to the founder comes from the larger 'Jinnah" family.

I think it is a shameless and an ignorant attempt to discredit his background.

He should receive help from the Pakistani Government, not because his link to the founder, but rather his family is deserving of such aid.

Re: Jinnah’s family barely survives in Quaid’s city

http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2007\08\17\story_17-8-2007_pg1_10

Quaid’s only grandson Nusli Wadia lives in Mumbai

The only grandson of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah is Nusli Wadia, son of Quaid’s daughter Dina Wadia, who resides in Bombay. The grandnephew of the Quaid-e-Azam, Liaquat Merchant, said this on Thursday when PPI asked him about proceedings at the Senate on August 15 regarding the financial condition of some members of the Quaid’s family in Karachi. Liaquat Merchant, who was conferred Sitara-e-Imtiaz for public services on August 14, 2007, said Aslam Jinnah is not the grandson of the Quaid-e-Azam, adding that Ms Khursheed Bibi is not his granddaughter. He said Aslam and Ms Khursheed are probably descendents of Nathoo Poonja, brother of Quaid’s father Jina Poonja.

Merchant is the sole surviving administrator for the Estate of Quaid-e-Azam, managing trustee of the Jinnah Foundation, president of the Jinnah Society and executive trustee of the Quaid-e-Azam Aligarh Education (Scholarship) Trust, rendering services in primary health and education for 20 years, propagating Quaid’s vision of a nation-building exercise in Pakistan through various books and publications. **He said some descendents of Jina’s other brother Waljee Poonja are in Karachi and had earlier filed legal proceedings to claim half of the estate of Fatima Jinnah as distant kindred entitled under Sunni law.Merchant said the Sindh High Court had held that both the Quaid and Fatima Jinnah were neither Shias nor Sunnis, and accordingly Fatima Jinnah’s estate would be governed by Hanafi law. The distribution of the estate of Fatima Jinnah has not yet taken place although more than Rs 150 million is lying deposited in the high court, being sale proceeds of Mohatta Palace with profit earned from 1992-93.

Shirin Jinnah and her only son Akbar passed away and their share is also lying with the court. The Waljee family has claimed entitlement of 50 percent of the estate of Fatima Jinnah. If Aslam Jinnah and Khursheed Bibi establish their identity as descendents of Nathoo Poonja under Muslim law, they will be entitled to make a claim before the high court, which will be decided in accordance with law. He said there are other family members of the Quaid in Pakistan, including the grandchildren of Quaid’s sister Mariam Bai and other grandchildren in India, all of whom may be entitled to a share in the estate as distant kindred. Fatima Jinnah and Shirin Jinnah left no issues. However, Dina Wadia and Fatima, daughter of Ahmad Jinnah, are entitled to a share in the estate as the heirs or sharers or distant kindred.

Re: Jinnah's family barely survives in Quaid’s city

by official i mean made public , however i think i've heard or read ( i'm not 100% sure) somewhere that he did married more than one time

Re: Jinnah's family barely survives in Quaid’s city

So Do I , i have read that he was done by some arranged marriage when he was leaving for England !

Crikey ! me mom neva thought of that when i left !

Re: Jinnah’s family barely survives in Quaid’s city

Pheewww! Thanks Reza sahib.

Wadias and Merchants! Now these are the names suitable to be the decedents of a super rich, suave, forward looking, chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce-occupant MA Jinnah would have.

No matter how much I admire those who travel by public buses, Jinnah wasn’t in that public bus league (period).

However some corners would still use this “distant nay dubious relative” of Jinnah just to throw dirt around. Oh well that’s what the $hite $hovelers do! For crying out loud! That’s their job!

Re: Jinnah's family barely survives in Quaid’s city

Jinnah's grandson Nusli wadia owns an airline company apart from so m,any other organizations. His airline's name is Go Air.

Re: Jinnah's family barely survives in Quaid’s city

I thought Jinnah only had one daughter and she lives in NY along with her children. How did his grandson ended up in Karachi? I have some serious doubts about this story.

Re: Jinnah's family barely survives in Quaid’s city

Instead of letting this issue of the alleged poor heir fester the govt should conduct necessary tests and hearings to declare once and for all whether he is authentic or not. Either case, as a poor citizen may be he and his ill wife can be given some assistance. Obviously this is not a setttled issue since it seems he is being afforded a govt car on special days.

Re: Jinnah’s family barely survives in Quaid’s city

Really sad and pathetic, NO NOT Mr Aslam Jinnah’s condition, but the wit, memory and reasoning ability, not just of our common Pakistani, but the shameless media which rides every tide that ensure the least bit of commotion and hence higher hits>ratings>ads>revenues!

This recent clip here from Aaj TV seems to have been produced with this above The Nation article from 2006 in the director’s hand.
http://www.paklinks.com/gs/showthread.php?t=261428

Now ironically this issue of Quaid’s grandson in Karachi and his miseries comes up every few months and the media re-hypes it with the same zeal each time.

In 2004 when Dina Wadia, came to Pakitan first time for 2 days, there was hype that Quaids family here would meet them; when Dina and her children, Quaid’s ONLY GRANDCHIDREN & great grandchildren from his ONLY DAUGHTER from his ONLY consummated wife Ruttie, came here she didnt meet them and apparently denied the alleged connection.

The connection was also denined by Liaquat Merchant a notable lawyer and Karachi citizen, who is Quaid’s sister’s son thus Quaid being his maternal uncle.

On 25 March 2004 Dawn published this.
http://www.dawn.com/2004/03/25/nat28.htm
** Quaid’s ‘new kin’ stranger to Merchant**

Previous day 24 March 2004 carried this;
http://www.dawn.com/2004/03/24/local2.htm
Quaid’s niece, family members visit mazar
where Aslam Jinnah was referred as Quaids grandson…

On 27 March 2004 after Dina Wadia visted Karachi on 26th this was in the paper;
http://www.dawn.com/2004/03/27/top11.htm
** Dina Wadia visits mausoleum of Quaid**

The Nation on 19 Sep 2006 carried this news, which I clearly remember reading elsewhere including hard copy as well as watching on TV news;
http://www.nation.com.pk/daily/sep-2006/19/columns5.php
Better late than never
*"The fifty-four year old Khurshid Begum and her brother Aslam Jinnah, of fifty-two years were called to the Chief Minister’s House in Karachi. The Chief Minister gave them a patient hearing and afterwards announced a donation of one house, a car, Rs one lakh in cash and a stipend of Rs 20 thousand per month for lifetime for the brother and sister.
Better late than never.
"
*
Now about Quaid’s other wife; he was 14/15 when his father sent him to England, shortly before he was married to a girl in a relatives family somewhere in Gujrat. The Nikah was held, and rukhsati planned after Mohamed Ali’s return from England after education few years later. It was all an arranged matter and while he was still in England the girl passed away. So the chapter ended there.
There are no *descendants *from that marriage.

And finally most recently, Liaquat Merchant finally offers an explanation much needed!

Thanks for this Reza :k:

***With all due respect for Mr Aslam Jinnah and his sad state as well as whatever connection he may have with the Quaid; the Govt’s support should be extended to some extent, but a stern announcemtn to clera up the misconception, confusion and repated media-stunts both by the media and the subject should be checked with facts and made public officially. ***

Re: Jinnah's family barely survives in Quaid’s city

I think its imperative that government settle this issue for once and all.

Its not that difficult to establish there true lineage.

Re: Jinnah's family barely survives in Quaid’s city

As long as there are famous men, there will be claimed relationships.

As long as we treat this poor Jinnah as a fun thing. It is OK.

Just a note about our Messenger, how many Quraishis and Sayyads would you check. Let them all be decedents of the Messenger.

Same way if this guy wants to be called Mr. Jinnah, so be it. He shouldn't expect any privileges for his claim. That's all.

Re: Jinnah's family barely survives in Quaid’s city

If the guy is making false allegations he is a Fraud and shud be brought to justice, if he is right then he deserves more help. This is father of nations family we are talking about, not a every Miraasi/Bhaand whos offsprings start calling themselves Quraishi.
