Jamaat seeks probe into Akram Durrani’s assets

The Jamaat-i-Islami has called upon the Supreme Council of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal to form a two-member committee to probe into assets of former NWFP chief minister Akram Khan Durrani. In a press release issued from the Markaz-i-Islami on Wednesday, the party’s general secretary of the NWFP chapter, Shabir Ahmed Khan, said the supreme council should determine who enjoyed the comforts of being in the government, the chief minister or speaker Bakht Jehan Khan of the JI. He said the JI was proud of the performance of the NWFP speaker during the five-year rule of the MMA.

He said Bakht Jehan had acted in accordance with the Constitution and law, but his opponents hurled all sorts of allegations against him. He said that had Mr Durrani wanted he could have dissolved the NWFP assembly but he struck a deal with the Musharraf government and delayed the dissolution to protect the electoral college for the re-election of the president. Instead of advising the NWFP governor to dissolve the assembly, he said, the chief minister waited till October 2. Mr Shabir Khan said all this proved that he had struck a deal with the Musharraf government.
