The Namesake
&

Anyone read any of these books?. I would like to know what you think before buying.

Thanks.

havent read them but did u already check the reviews on amazon.com and other websites?

Yes, I did. But I am more interested in finding out what desis think about these books.

I'll buy the books this weekend, regardless.

She’s Indian! Don’t read books by her.

I thought she was Bangali.

Anyway, I still wana read her. She portrays immigrant-life for desis living in America very well, so I heard.

Kareem, please don't make this Literary thread into your General bashing one. Please?

Madhanee, after reading your cute comment, I did google and here's what i found... you 've good taste. Not too many women look this fine with hair tied up.

Jhumpa Lahiri is begali, says so in her book. 'Interpreter of Maladies' was excellent, really beautifully written. Haven't finished 'The Nakesake' yet but so far its pretty engrossing although I don't think its going to quite as good as her first book.

Madhanee - I thought Unarranged Marriage was a kids book? Not that it matters of course.

Ahmadi, WTF would YOU know about Indian chick writers haiN?

Any relation to Bappi Lahiri, the 80s Bollywood music guru?...I wonder.

Wait till I win the Pullitzer and you see mah pic in black and white! :snooty:

Interpreter of maladies is an interesting collection of short stories, revolving around Bengali NRI's.

The reviews of Namesake have not been exactly gushing. Tell me if someone reads it.

I also liked 'Arranged Marriage' by Bannerji, another Bengali writer but not as cute as Lahiri - and she's no relation to motu Bappi far's I know.

But the best subbie book was Suitable Boy - loved the characters.

sounds interesting.. will check it out for sure.
