**Jhimpir Wind Power: Pakistan’s first
wind farm gets global recognition
**
RAWALPINDI: The first wind power generation project in Pakistan has recently been recognised by Project Finance Magazine.
The Alternative Energy Development was founded by the government in 2003. The purpose of AEDB was to reduce Pakistan’s dependence on hydro and fossil fuel based power generation by identifying alternative energy resources like wind, solar, biogas and micro based run of the river projects. The other major task of AEDB was to help foreign firms invest in this sector.
AEDB had earlier identified that Pakistan has the wind power potential to generate 50,000MW from this free and clean source of energy. Unfortunately, there was no bankable wind data, the data available with the Met department was not at the required turbine hub height and the banks or the investors were not comfortable by these claims alone. AEDB came up with a novel idea of providing ‘wind risk’ data to the investors, making Pakistan the first country to provide such data.
A very encouraging development. Every single natural resource you talk about presents so much of potential MashaAllah. While we are punished by the heavens for our wrongdoings and wrong decisions frequently, we also get indications of God’s willingness to help us raise from the mess we have put ourselves in.
Whoever govern the country, there should be some departments as ‘no-go areas’ for political parties so that those department could continue their work persistently.
Re: Jhimpir Wind Power: Pakistan’s first wind farm
I wish current govt did some projects like this to resolve the power crisis instead of trying to mint money on useless projects like rental power projects.
Re: Jhimpir Wind Power: Pakistan’s first wind farm
It is very nice to see this from you .
Though the AEDB was formed in 2003, but still the government should be appreciated and encouraged for any good step, just as it is critisised for any bad move.
Any news on how many megawatt and cost per unit of this farm?
This project was funded by the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Eco Trade & Development Bank and Habib Bank of Pakistan. NEPRA has approved Rs12.61 per KWh feed-in tariff for foreign-financed wind power projects. Once government-financed projects will start production, the end-user cost will decrease further.

sir ji, this project was completed in 2008 ;)
Re: Jhimpir Wind Power: Pakistan’s first wind farm
good news, other day i was watching in news abt a industrialist converted his factory on solar enegry....by taking loan from a bank...his factory is fully functional at any time ....so he was hopeful that he will be able to return the loan on time....
Re: Jhimpir Wind Power: Pakistan’s first wind farm
it is actually 500 mw. gujrat with its strong leadership takes the lead in india. it just inaugurated worlds biggest solar park wich will generate 500 mw of electricity.
gujrat is actually very innovative. they covered canals with solar panels which provide many benefits.
it prevents 95 million gallons of water from evaporating.
since it is over the canal then it has zero land acquisition cost.
since the electricity is provided to the villagers , so all the canals being in villages it saves the line loses.
and all that with ADB’s money and they will also make money from getting carbon credit awards.

Very much possible. Since the board which oversaw the development of the project was established in 2003. Secondly, as the newspaper reported, this project is gaining international recognition, which is a big thing for Pakistan.
Re: Jhimpir Wind Power: Pakistan’s first wind farm
Pakistan Meteorological Department has conducted a detailed Wind Power Potential Survey of Coastal Areas of Pakistan … which shows that contrary to the general impression, Sindh coastal areas have greater wind power potential than Balochistan coastal areas. The gross wind power potential of this area is 43000 MW and keeping in view the area utilization constrains etc. the exploitable electric power generation potential of this area is estimated to be about 11000MW.
Feasibility study for the installation of 18 MW Model wind power project is prepared. Total cost of the project is estimated to be about Rs. 850 million and the pay back period would be 7-8 years. The levelised cost of power generation is estimated as Rs. 2.9/kwh.
Given the potential of this source of energy, Pakistan should create an independent organisation for the development of wind energy. Alternative energy can considerably save Pakistan from hefty bills of oil we use for power generation.
Re: Jhimpir Wind Power: Pakistan’s first wind farm
You guys are so naive. Why would the corrupt PPP (or any other party) opt for this "almost free" source of energy whereas they are getting billions through taxes on Petrol and Oil.
Remember how many "innovative" experimental cars we have seen during the last years across the world?......from the ones running on solar energy, to wind energy, to electricity, to simply on water. These huge oil companies around the world have trillions of profits per month and there is no way, they are going to allow alternative fuels for cars.
Similarly, no way corrupt Pakistani govt. would allow setting up these life-long free electricity farms. Its just for publicity, in reality no one (except perhaps PTI.......and I have some doubts about them too) would ever do such things.

It's not just PPP which takes the bait. I heard some vague stories from a few people who spent their entire lives in the oil industry and I have concluded that the OPEC has a wing with huge funds on its disposal to discourage use of renewable energy resources for power generation. And what we see and what you are saying, point to the fact that there is a concentrated and organized effort for promotion of oil-based power generation around the world.

yes, in fact these multi-national oil companies have actually created organizations who systematically discourage alternate fuel sources. And, with a country like Pakistan and with people like Gillani and Zardari sitting at the top, these companies can have a field day.
