Question:

How does Islam see the Jews. I am sure you are aware of many negatives view on them. Are these valid?

RD, Malaysia

Reply:

The Qur’an has mentioned Jews positively as well as negatively.

As far as the positive aspect is concerned, the Qur’an acknowledges the religion of Jews as a Divine religion and their books as revealed books. According to the Qur’an, Muslim men can marry their women and Muslims can eat their food. The Qur’an gives them the special status of Ahl-e-Kitab who can live under an Islamic regime.

Negatively, the Qur’an mentions their crimes, such as changing the books of God in letter and spirit, killing the Prophets of God, ungratefulness towards God despite his blessings and the privileges He had bestowed upon them and their arrogant behavior in accepting the truth. In short, the Qur’an acknowledges their good aspects as good and bad aspects as bad, and does not show any prejudice towards them, but reveals the true picture.

As far as the position of the Jews in the hereafter is concerned, it is completely dependent on their behavior in the life of this world. Like all other human beings, if they are honest in their search for the truth and live their lives accordingly, they shall then deserve the eternal bliss of the life hereafter. On the other hand, if they show aversion to the truth and try to avoid it, they shall then deserve to face the wrath of the Almighty. It should, however, remain clear that the Qur’an has only addressed and declared the doom of the Jews that lived in the time and place of the Prophet (pbuh). These were the Jews on whom, according to the absolute knowledge of God, it had become obvious that Mohammad (pbuh) is a true prophet and messenger of God and therefore their rejection of Islam qualified them for the punishment of hellfire.

As far as the current hatred between Muslims is concerned, that is primarily because of the conflict of Palestine. Otherwise, throughout the course of history Muslims and Jews generally had good relationship. In fact, the Jews enjoyed full freedom and security under various Muslim regimes especially in Muslim Spain.

You write:

"I am sure you are aware of many negatives view on them. Are these valid?"

I would appreciate if you would kindly specify the particular “negative view” that you would like our opinion on so that a precise answer could be given.

I hope this explanation answers your question. You can always get back if you are still unclear.

May Allah guide us all towards the right path.

I hope you found the above information interesting. Recently I have come across so many people here where I am talking about Jews like as if they are the scum of the earth. I do get worried that these statements are simply said out of emotional hot air. But that is not an excuse for saying such inflammatory things in the first place. It is important to derive the correct context in which the Qur’an views these groups of people. Certainly I would agree with the above response in full. Certainly I do not think that for one moment that all Jews should be painted with the same brush. What may be true for one or a few individuals may not be necessarily true for the group as a whole.

Speaking as a religous muslim,my understanding is that jews are rascist--by that i mean,in muslim b/c any body black, red green yellow can convert & will be accepted welcommed as a muslim witout any reservation. With the jews there are couple of things that bother me.Even though there is no PROOF of it they act like where ever they are from Russia to Argentina &India to yemen, that they ae the originalJews .In other words since 7th century they have been able to look as diverse as indian & blond as german & husky as russian all derived from the pre christian race of which jesus or may be Mohommed may have been part as that was the only religion existent at that time.Whenever ,any group of people (and i mean even muslim)start claiming special blessed status it doesn't agree with my modern mind.Jews think that they are blessed race & no other race other than jew are blessed enough to attain there HIGHER position!Nazibelived that spl. race status for themselves & ironically the jews as a result of zionism took that crap just as oppression & occupation of nazism seem to have RUBBED off onto the holocaust survivors who are perpetreting the same brutality that they were such despecable picture of in 47-48 in concentration camps.THEMSELVES!!!

First all the jews cant be from one race.Indian jews look like indians. Then like brahmins in hindu they claim divine status just on heridetery basis ,a principle that long been discarded with monarchy kingdoms & advent of socialism & democracy.

Azad Munna - Jews cannot be, and will never be, a people of many races. To be Jewish is not simply an ideology, it is a history - the history of a people enslaved by Egyptians, freed by Yahweh through Moses, and granted their own land by that same God. Whether or not you agree with those assertions about what God gave them, it still remains that Judaism is not something you can really convert into - a convert can never share the history of those people, only a descendent can.

Wait a minutes.... I had tried to say something positive about the Jews before...

Ah, no one converts to judaism only born into it; and from the fathers side. If only the mother is Jewish then the offspring are not accepted as Jewish.

This is why I don’t understand the mentality of someone saying that all Jews or Zionists should be killed because they are so and so… etc. This is the same for when some people say to me that much of the government of the US is directly handled by Jews.

So what?

Are all Jews the same? Are we sure that we should paint them all with the same brush? Do we not often complain that we get the same treatment from everywhere? How is it that we complain when somebody says something derogatory about us Muslims as a whole, yet we feel very comfortable in saying similar things about Jews as a whole?

Your reaction to all such comments should be the most graceful one. Deal with people not according to their moral standards but according to your own. Forgive them for their ignorance, pray for their guidance and always remember that “Your Lord is fully aware of those who are rightly guided and is not unaware of those who have gone astray”.

Janu..you are wrong. It is the mother who must be a Jew for an offspring to be considered one. However, among some Reformed Jews (not all), the Talmudic laws are overlooked, and any one parent can be Jew and the kids raised as Jews are also considered Jews. The orthodox Jewish Laws are more stringent. A good historical background is found in "12 Tribes of Israel".

NYAhmadi; you are absolutely right.

And check this out:

The original and current Jewish definition of a born Jew is someone whose mother is Jewish. Even though the Torah forbids a Jewish woman to marry a Gentile
man, if she does, her children will still be Jewish.

The Torah also forbids a Jewish man to marry a Gentile woman, and if he does, his children by that woman will not be Jewish.

Got it from: http://www.beingjewish.com/identity/whoisajew.html

Mr partypooper,

I don't think there are many people who will argue that all Jews should be hated or killed. Most people recognise that there are good people in every race.

Israeli soldiers and settlers are legitemate targets though and any muslim who has any sympathy for them is a blithering fool. Not necessarily a bad person, just someone who has been hoodwinked, and worse, is helping hoodwink others.

Mr Xtreme,

I agree with you. What I don't really appreciate is when we talk about Isreali soldiers and settlers we tend to derogorate the general term Jews somewhere along the line.

And then people like us cannot blame others if non-Muslims get the wrong idea of our feelings for Jews.
