i read in today’s paper he is going to be the 8th retired army officer serving as Pakistan’s ambassador to any country
what are the army men doing in this job
ISLAMABAD: Former chief of army staff Jehangir Karamat is to be Pakistan’s next ambassador to the United States, Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri said on Saturday.
Mr Kasuri told reporters at the Pakistan Muslim League Secretariat that Mr Karamat would take up the post once formal clearance from the US had been received.
The former army chief will replace Ashraf Jehangir Qazi, who has taken up a UN post in Iraq. Mr Karamat was army chief from 1996 to 1998 and was succeeded by General Pervez Musharraf.
Mr Kasuri said Pakistan and India could not afford to let the dispute over Kashmir linger which is why it had to be resolved within a “reasonable timeframe”.
“A very important factor is that public opinion is in favour of a resolution. Public opinion does not always remain the same. The Kashmir dispute must be resolved within a reasonable timeframe,” he said. He did not elaborate on how long a “reasonable timeframe” was. He said the international community supported a quick resolution of the 56-year old dispute. He said Pakistan had not backtracked on its stance on Kashmir during the ongoing talks with India.
.. or may be a career diplomat who has spent his (or her) whole life studying the science of diplomacy and working with foreign governments. Then again seems like a posting to Washington DC is a choice bargaining chip when dealing with an ex-C'nC.

antiobl i have rarely heard something sensible coming out of ur mouth
its amazing how do u extract the meaning out of some thing that the poster never intended to say ..
yes certainly every body would agree that an Ambassador's place in not for any Mulla but how can u justify a Genaral sititng his a$$ there
UK is not less important srtategically, economically and from the defence point if view for Pakistan than the US then why was Dr Maleeha Lodhi sent there why not Aslam Baig or any guy from the ISI
and Dr Maleeha has done a marvellous job
These type of recriutments show that the country's beourocracy and the ppl are kept in dark regarding the important decissions and mutual relationship .. army's job is in the barrucks not in foreign embassies

Dr. Lodhi is one suave lady. No doubt about it. However there is no harm in having a fine General and a true gentleman as Pak Ambassador to US. It may work out really well considering the future military ties between the two countries.
