The link to the news will be on Yawn and other places soon. Still a developing story.
Re: JC formed to investigate rigging in 2013 elections
can an act of parliament render the JC ordinance invalid retrospectively?
Re: JC formed to investigate rigging in 2013 elections
Yes an act of parliament can render the JC invalid. Parliament can do anything including making legal things illegal if they wish. They are the legislative body after all.
The important thing to know is that the JC is in a bind. If they say the elections were free and fair, the PTI will never accept that. More importantly the PML will bribe, threaten and cajol the judges into saying just that.
The military on the other hand wants to see the PML on tender hooks at the phrase goes in Pakistan so they can direct Foriegn Policy and influence local decisions, so they are going to influence the JC as well. The PTI is the mouth piece of the military currently so they want to see exactly what the military wants a weakening of the democratic system.
At the end of the day the JC is actually extremely bad for the country as the fate of the elections of 180 million people reset in the hands of 3 people who can be bought, threatened or feared into making a decision.
Re: JC formed to investigate rigging in 2013 elections
Looks like military/ISI has been so weakened that they couldn’t even get PTI to win 10/150 NA seats in Punjab??? There was a time when they could form IJI and PMLQ to throw the governments out and form their own government. Now they are trying to throw PMLN out with these fake rigging claims, poor ISI/military establishment has no power whatsoever. Oh and ISI/military backing Taliban Khan?? Hmmm…It means ISI/military and Taliban have no differences, all this war on terror, Zarb e Azab, Army Public School attack are drama and inside jobs.
Re: JC formed to investigate rigging in 2013 elections
Yes that is why a 3 man group should have the ultimate authority over an election for a country of 180 million people.
Re: JC formed to investigate rigging in 2013 elections
This is great news. An important milestone reached in the year long struggle for electoral reforms by IK and Insafians notwithstanding all the flak it received from all sides. It’s a remarkable step to be better democratic process in a dysfunctional political system. Whatever the outcome may be, it has certainly awakened the general public about the power of their vote.
It comes at a unique time with the election happening in the KHI constituency soon it will have a dramatic impact on future elections at the local and district levels if everything go to plan. No more should folks be held hostage by mafia like parties with fear, threats, violence, and having their mandate stolen.
Re: JC formed to investigate rigging in 2013 elections
^ Absolutely. There’s now heightened level of awareness on the issue of electoral rigging due to this struggle. Just look at the way by-elections are being followed with so much interest and keen attention to details that too largely by a generation that grew up in the age of single state run channel or a military dictator. It’s incredible. Therefore, this is indeed a very pleasant change in Pakistani democracy, and PTI should be given credit for adding much needed energy, life and balance in Pakistan bleak, mundane and depressing two party politics.
Imran and PTI has shown that ideology/issue based street mobilisation - something that only Jinnah and Bhutto are given credit for - is still a possibility as well being a relevant and game changing phenomenon. If bloody revolution is not an option (and it shouldn’t be an option) then change can only come through these small, issue based episodic struggles to keep things moving forward.
Anyway, the latest update.
Rigging probe: Judicial commission to conduct public hearings from April 16 - Pakistan - DAWN.COM
It’s a huge shame that PMLN couldn’t form this JC straight after the elections when all parties (including the winning party) admitted rigging in the parliament. They had to go through all this humiliation - both in the public and behind the scenes. Someone had to keep protesting for good three years to get this JC formed.
