Javed Miandad Invited Musharaf...

Re: Javed Miandad Invited Musharaf...

I hold no brief for Modi and wish dearly that he had been defeated in the elections.

But his crime was that of omission, not commission. He did not take effective steps to control the riots when he had the power to do so; The charges against him is not that he was involved in the riots.

In most countries, the laws see these two on entirely different levels.

The issue is not just that Dawood has been (allegedly) given sancturay in Pakistan. There are many that are there, inluding from India's point of view, the list on the 20 that was given a few years ago. The difference is that Dawood has an interpol red alert against him,and Pakistan, being a signatory, is bound to deliver him. It is not just India that want's him.

That's why none of the politicians/ administrators in power attended the reception.

Having said that, nobody is accusing his daughter of anything. (If one were to split hairs - and I don't know if she still owns an Indian passport - she is legally bound to inform the government of his whereabouts is she knows it).

Incidentally, no democracy can use one citizen as a bait to catch a criminal, and that is the way it should be. The LTTE's Prabhakaran has an arrest warrant against him in India and a court conviction, but his mother was left untouched in India.

Javed Miandad is upset at Indian media coverage
Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharraf has snubbed an invite to a celebration of the wedding of ex-cricketer Javed Miandad’s son to a fugitive’s daughter.
Junaid Miandad had married Mahrukh Ibrahim, daughter of Dawood Ibrahim, a man the US suspects of al-Qaeda links.

The post-wedding party drew more than 1,200 guests in Karachi on Thursday but not the president nor prime minister.

Miandad had earlier expressed anger at the “negative propaganda” in the Indian media of the 23 July wedding in Dubai.

Intense security

The lavish post-wedding party - or walima - was held in a five-star hotel in the southern port city of Karachi.

Party sources said Mr Ibrahim was also not present. His whereabouts are unknown and Pakistan has denied he is living in the country.

He is wanted by India over a series of bombs that killed 300 people in Mumbai in 1993. He denies any involvement.

President Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz did not attend the party, sources said.

“They have stayed away for obvious reasons and I don’t think they need to be elaborated,” a close aide of Miandad told the Press Trust of India.

But sources said a number of government officials, prominent businessmen and former cricketers were at the party.

Security was intense at the venue and no photographers were allowed in for the blessing of the newlyweds.

The BBC’s Aamer Ahmed Khan in Karachi says several hundred paramilitary troops and police were deployed around the hotel by the Sindh government.

Dawood Ibrahim was placed on a US Treasury watch list of wanted terrorists in 2003.

Reports indicated that Indian and US intelligence services were monitoring guests in Dubai in case Mr Ibrahim or some of his closest associates attended.
