NA-55 by-election: Politicking still to get in gear
** PML-N’s Haji Pervaiz Khan emerges as strong candidate
By Aamir Yasin*
RAWALPINDI: Traditional enthusiasm for electioneering is still missing in NA-55 for which by-election is just a fortnight away.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)’s Haji Pervaiz Khan is emerging as a strong candidate after Sheikh Rashid Ahmed withdrew his nomination papers.
MSF leader Ejaz Khan Jazi is contesting election as an independent candidate and will likely give a tough time to PML-N’s Haji Pervaiz Khan.
Political pundits believe that PML-N will clinch victory given overwhelming popularity of Nawaz Sharif in the city.
No candidate has yet started public gatherings, rallies, door-to-door contacts and corner meetings. Colourful banners and posters are the only sign of elections in the city.
Some small meetings at selected places are reported, however. It looked that people were not much interested in the elections after formation of PML-N government in Punjab.
Inflation and energy crisis can also be counted as big factors for diverting public attention from the elections. Anyhow, the situation will be clear only after June 26 by-election.
Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has not fielded a candidate for this seat under an agreement with the PML-N, according to which one party would not field a candidate for a seat vacated by the other. So the PPP candidate Aamir Fida Paracha had withdrawn himself in favour of the PML-N candidate.
Sheikh Rashid has fielded Begum Naseem Ali, a woman councillor in Rawal Town Council, in his place against the PML-N candidate. Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan has withdrawn his nomination papers as PPP had not issued him a ticket.
In total, 333,928 voters - 183,215 male and 150,713 female - were registered in NA-55. The constituency has been vacated by PML-N leader Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, who defeated five-time winner Sheikh Rashid in the general election.
As many as 18 candidates are running for this seat. They include Ejaz Khan Jazi (Independent), Prof Hafiz Waseem Ahmed (Independent), Chaudhry Abdul Hameed Babu (Independent), Haji Pervaiz Khan (PML-N), Haji Muhammad Saleem Khan (Independent), Dr Munawar Fayyaz Sunni (Independent), Zubair Yousaf (Independent), Sardar Naseer Ahmed (PFP), Syeda Nasim Ali (Independent), Shahid Orakzai (Independent), Shaikh Muhammad Raheel Latif (Independent), Alamgir Butt (PPP-SB), Aziz Ahmed Mughal (Independent), Muhammad Ikramul Haq (Independent), Muhammad Akmal Ludhianvi (Independent), Mushahidullah Khan (Independent), Muhammad Gulzar Awan (PAP) and Malik Abdul Rehman Sadiq (Independent)..
