International students dont get financial assistance, certainly not as easily as you say. Particularly not students on student visas. Dont know about Bilal, but whenever you have the son of some tin pot ruler studying in some ivy league school, that raises some eyebrows…

What work has he done in his constituency?? Shiekha has been MNA in that area for a long time, and nothings improved in our constituency. My opinion not being fact? If you dont even know how this baffoon sheikh rashid goes around asking for votes you dont know anything about him. This is also the same 'character' who once said, when asked why he isnt married, 'oo jee jis ko doodh roz milta ho us ko gayein palney ki kya zaroorat hai'... And yes, just goto lal-haveili at 2am friday night, and u'll see mujraz going on inside.

Pindi has improved. Just look at Murree road man, it is a million times better than what it used to be, remember the old committee chowk? over all the roads and transport have improved. The economy of Pindi has flourished, just like most major cities of Pakistan, more schools and colleges, more business opportunities, and although most of the work may not be directly associated to the efforts of Sheikh Rashid, he like any other politician will claim it to be his doing.

Of course I dont personally know Sheikh Rashid, I grew up in Islamabad, but I have been following his political career from the time he defeated the mayor of Rawalpindi. Sheikh may have loose morals and have mujras at lal haveli (something I am not aware of) or court lollywood actresses or local prostitutes but he has never projected a pious muslim image. People of rawalpindi love him for what he is. He talks tough and knows what people want to hear. There was a time when PPP could have defeated him if they had continued with Chaudhry Mushtaque, who was loved in that constituency but local PPP administration went with Agha Riaz-ul-Islam whose only influence was with the baRa market traders. PPP had a lot of support in Pindi, but after Zia era cantonement went to Ijaz ul haq and Rashid became a strong politician in his constituencies. Nawaz Sharif lost a lot of good will in Rawalpindi when he abandoned Sheikh Rashid in the klashnikov case.

In Rashid's case, he does not have to do a lot to win, he just had to play it safe and not screw up badly. Sheikha is shrewed, he himself moved away from the limelight of being the govt spokesman long before Musharraf's govt started losing support.

It will be interesting to see how this contest plays out now with BB's assasination right in the heart of that constituency. Not only will PP gain the sympathy vote but the "apologetic" vote as well.

Didn't Mr. Hashmi, pledge to leave NS and his party if they contested the elections? He sounded pretty enthusiastic in saying that..and crowds cheered to it, at which Hamid Mir said 'Now you all are witness to Mr. Hashmi saying this...' I almost clearly remember this from the Capital Talk show that was held outside recently.

Spock, sorry for replying late to this thread. My read on Javed's influence was wrong. Benazir's death and Nawaz's return played a big role in Shaikh Rasheed's defeat. Did PPP file a candidate against Rasheed in this constituency or was it hashmi vs shaikha?
