Japanese hair straightening.

Has anyone gotten it done? My co-worker got it done from China and her hair looks SOOOO amazing. She says she just washes them and brushes them (no need to blow dry/straighten) and her hair is frizz free, straight and shiny. In the US, the procedure costs anywhere from $200 to $1000 depending on where you get it done from, so its quite an investment. I wanna know what experience any desis have had with it, if any.

Re: Japanese hair straightening.

do a search, we've talked about this so much.

i had it done few years ago.

it only looks good if you have thick hair, because it completely flattens and straightens it.

Re: Japanese hair straightening.

Permanent straightening over here varies in price depending on how long and thick your hair is. For my hair, it would cost so much. I decided not to do it. It's nice to leave my hair wavy once in a while and straighten it at other times. With permanent straightening, you don't really have any other options style wise (well, at least not with my hair).

It is well worth it to invest in a good straightener. Even though my hair is quite thick and wavy, it takes me about 20-30 minutes to straighten all my hair and it's shoulder length right now. For me, this is the better option.

Femme Fatale and Shahreen both had their hair permanently straightened. From what I recall, they were both very happy with the results.

Re: Japanese hair straightening.

thanks guys.
i believe the straightness lasts around 6 months atleast. also i heard as hair grows the hair at the top becomes more voluminous and it looks even better. i luv the chinese girl's hair. i dont know if desi hair will have the same effect though.

Re: Japanese hair straightening.

I had my hair permanently straightened a year ago, and I love the results. I have naturally curly, frizzy hair, and I've enjoyed the freedom of being able to wash and go.

The pros are that your hair always looks well groomed and shiny.

The cons are that your hair does get very weak, you're more prone to split ends and breakage, and you have to be careful about coloring it, since you can damage it even further.

It does give you the "chinese girl" look you're talking about. In the beginning, your hair is very pin straight. So much so that it's hard to keep it in a pnnytail or attach a clip to it. But after a couple of months, like you said, it gets a little more voluminous, and gets that perfect texture, as if you had it freshly blow dried (straight, shiny, but still able to hold hair clips).

It's definitely worth the money though and I totally recommend it.

Re: Japanese hair straightening.

thanks raatkirani. i have fine/silky hair that is straight but i'd like it to be pin straight. but im not going to undergo the procedure if its going to make my hair weaker.

Re: Japanese hair straightening.

Don't do it if your hair is already fine/silky. (You already have straight, groomed hair, lucky you!) It will totally damage your hair then. I have thick, coarse hair that I had never ever dyed before, and it totally weakened it. Get a straightening iron and use that occassionally.

Re: Japanese hair straightening.

My sister got it done. Her hair went from dry, frizzy and curly to straight, sleek and shiny. I think it cost around $700-800 in Chicago. She looks more like a banda now :D But if you already have straight here, why bother? I also have wavy hair and i like to have the freedom of leaving it wavy and curly like it is or straightening with an iron.

Re: Japanese hair straightening.

I paid $220 for straightening at Hayato in NYC. It looked great and was really easy maintenance. I noticed alot of split ends and damage after I had it done. I had alot of dryness on the ends. A year later I colored my hair and it became really dried out on the ends. So I cut off all the hair that was straightened.

After having super-straight hair I missed my naturally curly hair. Now it's all grown back out and I can see that my natural hair is healthy. So the first year with straight hair was great but I just got bored of flathead and hated the damage. I wouldn't get it done again.

Re: Japanese hair straightening.

i think i want mine done… :hmmm: me thinks me should invest in this…

Re: Japanese hair straightening.

I'm already doing enough damage to my hair when I'm highlighting it.

I'll live with the frizz.....or use a good flat iron.

Re: Japanese hair straightening.

Yaar mein tenu thappar maroon?? Your hair is fine! it’s naturally straight, if u want the “pin-strait” look just run straightener through the ends.. I remember last fall my hiar was so thick and black and beautiful.. and then I got it highlighted and it feels so pathetically sick and oily and puny now.. :teary1:

Re: Japanese hair straightening.

thanks so much guys.
i gather from your input that the look DOES damage desi hair (even though the chinese girls hair is so hot)
sara your hair is fine.
i hate using straightners because they damage my hair rapidly...i mean i use them like once in a blue moon and i see split ends appear almost the next week. I thought permanent straightening was safer but i guess not. i read the reviews online and almost all women said there was no damage (i guess they were salon promoters or something...)

Re: Japanese hair straightening.

Actually from what I've seen, if you get it done properly, it does no damage. It didn't damage mine and it hasn't damaged my cousins' either. That's the whole thing about the Japanese straightening system - its not meant to damage!

Re: Japanese hair straightening.

sometimes I wish I could dye/highlight my hair too. But i Just love my hair’s natural texture that I do not want to chemically treat it and don’t want no premature gray hair due to chemical treatments. Although I am getting some gray hair here and there. :teary1:

Re: Japanese hair straightening.

I got it done last June...cost around $400 in Boston...and got it colored a week later..there was minimal damage..the hairstylist did a wonderful job.

I loved the low-maintenence care and high maintenance look..My hair is thick but its also rather silkly/fine ...and the procedure really made my hair look super flat..I ended up having to blow dry to add in volume at times...

Was a good experience, but I don't think I'd shell out that kinda money on my hair again..

Re: Japanese hair straightening.

That must be from a GOOD salon using a GOOD system. Cause when I asked my hair straightening person specifically about damage, she said there is always damage. That you can’t avoid it with the straightening she was doing.

Re: Japanese hair straightening.

A girl I knew who went for Japanese rebonding had her hair falling in 2 days time...I guess it was major hairfall since she remembers the date an all...
I guess it really comes down to where ur getting it done...if you are going for it it should be somewhere which has been tried, tested and can be trusted. And a credible hair stylist once told me that it does do permanent umm if not major but definitely little damage...he said anything you put through chemical treatments can not be the same again. A lot depends on your hair texture/health too.

A good hair straightener at home can do nicely, and allows you to keep all your options open too.
