Japan is past its imperial greatness

As-salamolaikum,

I had been talking to some Chinese students at Carleton University.

They said they respected the industrialization of Japan and that Japan was able to form an overseas empire with its capital in Tokyo, like the British did.

Why did the Japanese become so powerful, because they were well educated in the worldly matters like Sciences, mathematics, and other matters.

Usually the Japanese tell me that Korea is most similar to Japan, than the Chinese mainland.
