A movie of the book by Karen Jay Fowler. It’s about a group of people who get together to discuss books written by Jane Austen. There are funny parts, like when one male joins the club, the others are all females and he has certains habbits and opinions that annoy them and he says the wrong things. But they all get used to each other and become friends. The books of Jane Austen have an influence on all their lifes. If you really want to understand everything, it’s better to have read all the Austen books since those characters are being discussed. I had first read the book last year, and they discuss the Austen characters more in the book than they do in movie, I couldn’t understand every discussion because I haven’t read all the Austen books. Still it was all enjoyable. Maybe for the movie it’s not really necesary to have read all the Austen books, because my daughter hasn’t read a single Austen line in her life, yet she enjoyed the movie too. The different opinions each character of Fowler has about the characters of Austen and Austen herself are interesting, both in the movie and in the book. And the way Fowlers characters look at the Austen characters, helps you to understand the Fowler characters better. Every member is having personal problems while they get together as the Jane Austen Book Club. In the end everyone has gone through some sort of change and most problems are solved, some of them even have completely different lifes.
Though the film is fun, I prefer the book. The movie is available on YouTube. Here is a link:
I just watched the Jane Austen Book Club a few weeks ago and didn't enjoy it. However, the movie did inspire me to check out a Jane Austen novel. I read Pride and Prejudice several years ago and loved it. This time i'm reading Northanger Abbey which isn't bad but not as great as PP. I plan to read her other novels as well. But u're right the book's better.
I haven't read all the books either. I still have to read 'Mansfield Park' and 'Northanger Abbey'. From what I did read, I liked 'Sense and Sensibility' and 'Persuasion' most.
BBC did film Austens books for television. I think they did everything, but I haven't seen them all, so I could be wrong.
In this movie, that one male in the group reminded me of myself a few times, I sometimes say the wrong things too when I'm in non-Pakistani society, the way he does in the book and in the movie. I sometimes don't know how to behave either when I'm with Dutch people. It was funny.
