**Usain Bolt claimed his third gold medal of the World Championships as Jamaica won the 4x100m relay but the quartet failed to set a new world record.**Bolt, who had earlier won the 100m and 200m titles in Berlin, ran the third leg of the relay with Jamaica’s quartet crossing the line in 37.31 seconds.
Steve Mullings, Michael Frater and Asafa Powell were the other three members of the team that won gold.
The finished ahead of Trinidad with Great Britain claiming bronze.
Jamaica had rested Bolt and Powell ahead of Saturday’s final and with America disqualified were hot favourites for the gold.
And with Mullings getting the quartet off to a fine start they were rarely troubled as Bolt handed over to Powell to bring the team home.
But despite claiming gold there was a sense of anti-climax that the team had failed to better the world record they set at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
For Bolt though, his medal haul of three gold medals saw him match his achievements in Beijing last year.
“I wasn’t really thinking about getting three gold medals because I could be in better shape,” insisted Bolt, who broke his own world records in the 100m and 200m with times of 9.58 sec and 19.19 sec respectively.
Trinidad’s time of 37.62 sec saw them set a new national record while Britain ran a season’s best of 38.02 sec.
It was Jamaica’s seventh gold medal of the Championships with their 4x100m women’s relay team also earlier winning gold.
