IVF

Hi All,

anyone had any experience with IVF?? please share your story’s.

Re: IVF

clothesmad - Not my experience but my close friend tried IVF at age 35. Her first round did not work. But 2nd one did.

Lots of ultrasounds were done to make sure she was ovulating and meds were given to make sure that everything was in optimal conditions for conception.

Re: IVF

Is it true that the chances of IVF being successful reduce with age?

Re: IVF

^^ lolz at age reducing thing...i did a project on IVF last year and i dun think i ever came across anything like that.... :S

but, it takes time...not everytime is succesful and in the UK there was some women who had 8 eggs planted in her and they all started to grew nd become embryo and it was obviously dangerous....dun knw what hapened wid that women but after that its a law that only 2 eggs can be implanted in your uterus.....

not sure if i was any help!! :) :/

Re: IVF

We are Inshallah expecting our first one in less than 2 weeks. We conceived by IVF,and it happened after the first try,AH.
What do you want to know? Anything specific? Will be more than happy to be of any help.:)
It was a long process.By this I mean series of scans and bloodworks leading to the IVF itself.
We can never thank Almighty enough for the blessing, but one thing is for sure,it was one emotional roller coaster ride!!

actually it’s not that funny  I know I should’ve googled it instead of asking but anyway just did that. Please refer to the excerpts below, chances of IVF being successful do reduce as the female gets older.

Re: IVF

Do u have to pay separate each time u go for an IVF treatment or does it come in some kinda package?

Re: IVF

^ i think you pay every time and its hella pricey too!

also yes, of course the chances of conception decrease with age- the quality of your eggs is simply not as good as when you are younger. plus there can be more health issues in carrying a pregnancy full term too when you're older.

my bff conceived her baby with ivf. he was born 5 weeks early but AH is doing really, really well now. she went through a really tough time- it was hard on her emotionally, it was hard on her physically what with all the meds, the shots, the ultrasounds, etc. she almost lost the baby once and at one point she was carrying three! so i mean, its not an easy thing and its certainly not as glamorous as hollywood makes it sound with their sets of matching twins and mom's looking super fit.
i know she's not going for another round again- for her next baby, she's adopting!

Re: IVF

I have to agree with SGC,its nothing glamorous or easy. Its the last resort!!
Regarding the success rates with increasing age,yes age does have an affect on the success rates. That is why in women who are beyond a certain age the number of fertilized eggs transferred is increased so as to ensure a better outcome vs.women younger than 30 or 35 where they do not transfer more than 2(although statistics vary).

Regarding the cost, its very expensive. We were lucky that the insurance covered almost everything and I just had to pay a very tiny amount of money as compared to the total cost. There is a load of medicines involved which cost big bucks and not to mention the almost daily or every other day ultrasounds and blood works, and the loads of other stuff that goes into IVF.
Different insurances in the US have different level of coverage for fertility treatments. The coverage we had a few years ago did not even cover for a basic consultation with a reproductive endocrinologist whereas the current plan did cover 2 IVF cycles in patient's lifetime, provided a few conditions.
The center where we went had other payment options. They charged a certain amount for 2 IVF cycles(regardless of the type of insurance). If a couple was not able to concieve after that they were to return 60% of that total amount to be used for other options (like adoption).

Re: IVF

^ wow, you are super lucky with the insurance coverage! its not covered at all by the government in canada, i believe, and i know my friend and her husband had to pay for pretty much everything themselves.

Re: IVF

The initial round of IVF is the most expensive. Thats when they get the woman to super-ovulate and they take out as many ripe eggs as possible. These are then inseminated in the lab. Some are used for transfer and the rest are cryogenically frozen. So if the first round isnt successful, the frozen embryos are used so that initial step is only done once.

Re: IVF

its sad that the Cdn govt pays for abortions and sex change, but for IVF its zip.

If one has a good health coverage at work, some of it can be paid through that. it costs roughly 10 thousand dollars. And as SGC said, its a last resort and not glamorous at all.

Re: IVF

We purchased a package deal.

Paid USD$16K + meds for 3 IVF ( It's a good deal, but you have to have $24,000 up front). You have to pay for all the meds separately.

My insurance not paying.
My first IVF was done last year (Nov-Dec 2009) -- MC at 9 weeks. Because of my age, they planted 5 embies! If all grew I have to go for selective removal. Meaning they will ''kill' the fetus which not very good (low heart beat). As a muslim I'm surely not going with this option.
I told the doctor I will keep all five even there is a chance of abnormal.

I'm on my second IVF. Now I'm on BCP for 20 days .. lupron is next.

bye :)

[/QUOTE]

You can get "package deals". The cost probably varies alot from place to place. Here a one cycle package of IVF is about $5-6,000 and a 3 cycle package about $11,000

I dont know about the rest of Canada, but in Quebec the government has announced that it will start covering IVF 100% this year. Prior to this, its was 50% tax refundable

I'm over 40. I had 24 eggs!!

The good thing -- I have 11 x 8 cells embies. Planted 5 - frozen the balance.

The bad thing -- when you produce so many eggs you will get bad bloated! (they have a name for this but I can't remember) They had to remove 3 gallon liquid from my tummy!! Imagine that!
While on bed, I can't turn left, can't turn right, can't carry my son (he is not yet 2 at that time). Can't sit, can't stand .. is like hell!! Is a long story ..

This time they will make sure I only produce a little eggs. :)
