I am considering to have an IVF…I have read a LOT about the procedure and all but I would like to know any first hand experiences. If any of you have tried this procedure I’d like to know if it worked, were there any complications or side effects to this? Thanks…

Re: IVF anybody?
I did not do IVF but I did go thru the medicated cycles. They were the same as an IVF cycle, we just didnt need to do the egg harvesting/implantation.
As I remember, it was hormone injections for the first 9 to 14 days. Bloodwork and ultrasound every other day to check for "super-ovulation". When ultrasound confirms that eggs are ripe, you get a big shot of hormone that will make the eggs release. That ended my medical intervention, the rest we did on our own. In an IVF cycle, the doc will "harvest" the ripe eggs using a laparoscope. Then bring them along with the husbands sperm sample to the lab. They'll fertilize the eggs, let them grow a bit. You would return when the eggs are deemed ready and they inject the fertilized eggs back into you in the hope that one will implant successfully. You'll get a break of a week or so and then back for ultrasound and bloodwork. Infertility docs typically see you once a week for the first trimester.
The meds that I was taking caused hot flashes and mood swings. It was unpleasant but endurable.
Hope this helps! And good luck!
Re: IVF anybody?
mama, if you don't mind my asking, what about cost?
i met a couple who did go thru IVF, and their experience wasn't pleasant. it was a lot of physical and emotional pain for her, as she told me, and it cost them $12000. in the end, they did have a baby boy but he was very tiny at birth- although i believe he is doing fine now.
but i remember her saying if she knew how much sufferingpain was involved, she would not have chosen IVF and would have adopted instead. having said that, she was still preggo when she told me this... probably after having her son she feels differently.
Re: IVF anybody?
I was very lucky with the health insurance plan that I had, they covered the cost of all my treatments and tests. If I had to go thru the whole egg retreival/implantation thing though, it would have cost us between 12 and 20 thou. Was it worth it? Absolutely - for us. But thats such a personal thing, yeah? Some people would rather adopt than go thru the whole gut-wrenching thing. It isnt easy for sure, and not just physically. Family, friends and acquaintances all feel the need to get involved and make their opinions known and usually end up causing more stress and pain no matter which path the couple decides to take. Some choose adoption and some choose to try infertility treatment, either way all that matters is a happy outcome for the parents.
BTW, my boy was very tiny at birth too. I think thats kind of a side-effect of forcing hormones, using hormones that arent made by the mother.
Re: IVF anybody?
SGC in the end if it did work and they have a baby now.. I am pretty much sure it was worth the pain and money..
Mamaof3 I've been thru some procedures including IUI, so just want to give this a chance too as well... I mean why not if you can afford it... btw you are quite right about people wanting to know each and every lil progress u r making and that just adds to your misery...that's why I never tell anyone..it's between me, hubby and our nmoms that's it :)
Re: IVF anybody?
Ive had one cycle IVF/ICSI treatment. It did not work for me the 1st time but i'm still optimistic and will try again in July. I have been put on the waiting list at the hospital which takes upto 2-3 years. We self funded the 1st and probably will do the same for the second treatment. It costs around £3500 for each treatment including the cost of medication. Its very expensive but nothing is more important than having a child of your own.
If any one wants more info let me know...
Re: IVF anybody?
hey chicco i want to know abut your exact problem u faced n in the end u had to go for IVF??when u were not concieving,so wat was the reason behind it?hormonal problem?i want to know the problem dat at which stage a woman is recomended this treatment??plzz answer.
Re: IVF anybody?
Well the doctors say we can still naturally conceive to have a baby it just takes longer for certain people. I found out only after having an ultrasound that i have a cyst on my right ovary and my husband has a low sperm count. We have been put on the waiting list at the hospital which takes upto 2-3 years so we self funded our treatment for IVF which was about £3500. There are many treatments, the doctors advice you according to what your problems are. We have been married for 3 years and have been trying for a baby straight away but unfortunately no luck yet, our next IVF/ICSI is in July which we will fund our selves again. At the end of the day its upto Allah.
Re: IVF anybody?
hv u taken the medication metformin??
Re: IVF anybody?
hi chico thanks for your reply.. can u tell me if you tried acupuncture with IVF ? I've read ppl having accu with IVF for better results...did your doc mention/recommend anything like that?
Re: IVF anybody?
Horizon this procedure is recommended normally if the ovaries are unable to produce healthy eggs and/or sperm count is low . Also if there's some problem with fallopian tubes..
Re: IVF anybody?
No, I havent been adviced to take metformin. We only take the medication when we go through IVF otherwise the doctors havent prescribed us with anything as they say we can still naturally have children...
I have also heard of accupuncture combined with IVF works for some people, i havent discussed this with the doctors and have not fully researched this yet. Please keep me updated with any info you think could be beneficial.
