Ninjamummy said it best - really, how old or how mature are you? On one hand you’re lamenting your “woe is me” tale about being mistreated by your FIL and now you make it into some story with an exciting or surprise ending that your rapt readers have to know about 
Maturity and sympathy are not in isolation - all of our actions taken in their totality, reflect upon us and how we are perceived.
