For all those iTunes experts out there (and by that I do mean Niksik & TLK Bhaiya 
) please help me out with the following scenario:
Had an iPhone 3Gs
Upgraded to iPhone 4s last december
Want to now pass on my 3Gs to my 9 yr old son to use as an iPod
How do I set that up in iTunes? Do I make him his own apple ID? How do I wipe out my contacts and apps from the old phone without messing up my new one when synching?

Go to settings, click on general and scroll down to reset.. They have options there about what you want to reset.

^ does that pull up both phones and then I select the older model and do a reset?

No i think it would reset just the phone not your apple acct. The apps you bought are the apps u own. So it can delete those. However since he is little make him his own acct with a prepaid itunes card but if you want more parental control then add a password that only u know.
