Presentin a wonderful fast bowler from Down Under - affectionately called Thommo…Yes, its Jeff Thomson.
During early and mid 70s, Jeff Thomson alongwith Dennis Lillee were scaring the life out of anyone. These two men, fired the passions of a generation of Australian cricketers, bringing many spectators through the gate to see them take the game up to any batsman they encountered.
Jeff Thomson and his sheer pace! Check out these 2 video clips
This gesture from Thompson would have gotten him a one match suspension and the whole match fee fined, if he was playing today. How much cricket has changed now? At that time, no one would think twice about this gesture, now the match referee will pee in his pants and call for a grand jury investigation.
From those two clips I can't understand how Thomson was and is made out to be the quickest and most fearsome bowler ever to lace it up.....his action sucked and I don't know how he was able to generate any pace off of that awkward side on sling action....
In comparison I was watching a clip on the bodyline series and saw Larwood who wreaked havoc in that series to have a much more smoother and contemporary runup, action and delivery, capable of generating really good pace.....
As far as action goes, Thompson had the oddest, most uncomfortable action possible. The sling-shot actions puts a lot of strain on the back, and just before delivering the ball, he arm comes in front of his eyes. And to think, he bowled along side Lillee, who had perhaps the smoothest, most pleasing action for a fast bowler.
The second clip, just shows a regular ball, with a shot played for a few runs. Definitely not a Thompson classic, by any stretch.
