do you believe this? like relationships with people in your life in terms of love or friendship…
how do you know if your choices are right or would bring out the best outcome in your life?

Re: “It's choice--not chance--that determines your destiny.”
Its a bit of both. Most of the things are in the control of the creator (by chance) and HE has also allowed you to a certain extent to make a selection (by choice). As Hazrat Ali (r.a) says that I have more faith on the things that are in the control of my creator than the things that are in my control. They are for our best interest and we have no control over it. The appearance HE gave me, my color, my parents, the time and age in which I was born, my city in which I grew up, the people I came across (got a chance to interact with),....etc. all of these at times contribute to a certain extent (varying from cases to cases) the choices that are available to a person and they all were selected by the creator.
Prayers, good intentions in searching for a good person, sincere feelings, a positive attitude, respecting parents advice, ....etc are in our control, yet what is written in our destiny we might not always be 100% sure of how the person turns out to be, (his true face)> Only time tells us. Hence, we do try our level best but destiny is very much involved, Alhamdulillah. HE never does injustice with us. It was all planned by HIM, who we would end up with (even though apparently we made choices), and it was in the best of our interest, whom we deserved based on our nature and past choices in life.
Re: “It's choice--not chance--that determines your destiny.”
I think life is a mixture of free will and predestination.
I believe that the people who enter or become part of your life have a purpose. You may not realize it until much later, but even the negative experiences shape your character and teach you something. Apart from relationships, our decisions in other matters of our lives....from the mundane to the complex....don't always come with guarantees though you have the responsibility of being careful and considering the pros and cons of an issue. I can understand the comfort of having a guarantee....but the uncertainty has its own charm....makes life interesting.
Re: “It's choice--not chance--that determines your destiny.”
I believe constant hard work and prayers could change destiny.
@R.A.W Please correct me if i m wrong.

It's choice--not chance--that determines your future. A person may be able to change his/her destiny by appropriatechoice, and with some chance/luck.

You see brother, Our Destiney = Will of Allah about us. He can change the destiny of anyone HE wants, anytime. He makes rules and He can change/break it. He did it for Ibrahim (a.s) by changing the nature of fire for him. He made dry paths for Musa (a.s) in the Sea. He protected Younus (a.s) inside a fish. He gave Maryam (a.s) a son Isa (a.s) without a husband. He converted the stick of Musa (a.s) into a snake....etc.
Whoever make efforts for anything along with sincere prayers, he does get it sooner or later, by the grace and mercy of Allah swt (if there is khair in it for him, otherwise it might be a 'test') Na-maloom Humari kohshishon or raat ke roney pe Us Zaat-e-paak ko taras a jaye aur woh destiney change kar de aur kahey: Dedo isko jo yeh maang raha hai...

i never really saw this as true before, but i do believe in this now seeing all the bad experiences i've had and all the good ones recently. it makes me want to believe in a higher power even more than i did before. i judge others a lot less than i did before, improved so many of my personal flaws from the bad experiences.....isnt' that strange and found strength from the good, strong people i've come across recently that soldiered through the same type of bad experiences and are leading a good life now.
why is it that we learn the most about ourselves from the bad, scary experiences........? well atleast i did and it sucks to think that i was destined to experience that
It's choice--not chance--that determines your future. A person may be able to change his/her destiny by appropriatechoice, and with some chance/luck.
but the choices we make are made with whatever knowledge and experiences we have at the time, whatever improvements we made in our life at the time, which might not be enough to make the right decision and what exactly is luck, something God sends our way?
the movies "sliding door' and "twice upon a yesterday" were all about everything is predestined and it's just a matter of time you come across those people and those experiences, the sequence might be mixed up if different actions, decisions are taken at a certain time in the timeline but sooner or later all of it will happen
Re: “It's choice--not chance--that determines your destiny.”
I think both matter.
This reminded me of the book Outliers where the author malcolm gladwell has analyzed big success stories of our times (like bill gates, the beatles etc). He points out that not only were these people gifted and made the right choices, but they also got a huge boost by being at the right place at the right time i.e. opportunity/luck.
