Okay, so it’s been awhile since I’ve been to Pakistan around 7-8 years I think. I know that a lot has changed since then, so what do I need to bring with me this time. How much should I expect my trip to cost as I’ve got to go clothes shopping for me and the girls, oh and my husband and darling beta as well.
What will be expected of me, as I’m the barri bahu now - I have two chotis to boss around (I’m a gori, so I doubt they’ll take it
What gifts are popular nowadays? I.e. used to be perfumes, sweaters, and such, what are the aunties, cousins, and kids looking for nowadays? Besides an Xbox 360, I’ve already had cousins we haven’t spoken to in years ring up and ask for that…
Anyways, any and all tips and advice are appreciated. By the way, please don’t move this to travel, it’s more of a “human interest” topic
^LOL, because I’m a gori, I’ve never been so good at the “boss around another adult just because she’s your SIL” I’m usually thinking “Oh my god, I can’t believe someone just said that to a grown woman!”
Seriously though - I need some advice, at least about what to take from everyone. 15 years after marriage, I still always manage to put my foot in at and make at least one major cultural gaffe. I guess I’m a slow learner.
I would not bother taking presents for anyone from here people are na shukrey plus they expect better present next time.
I believe in giving money to the poor people. Few people in family are in need we try to help them out every way possible. But to give presents and taking their nakhras after wards... i simply say if you have good $3000+ saved up ... Edhi foundation and Earthquake victims plus many others can use that money for better use.
I am not saying we should not exchange presents but i have seen from my past experience- i had to deal with nakhra... and i simply have no paitence for it...

i agree, you give them prezzies and they complain, you dont and they complain....theres no pleasing them.
amana....Though it really depends on the individuals you plan to give those gifts to, I'll tell what we usually do.
We don't buy like crazy n try to keep the 'probable needs' in mind....On our last trip we bought a few electric toothbrushes ....(mind you these were for first relations like my bil...n sil etc.) a few good handbags...nothing highly expensive, just like the ones i buy for myself...,some ravenburger puzzles n chocolates for kids....some shaving items for gents in family....a few perfumes....some cosmetics....my kids made some calendars for their grand fathers, with some nice drawings etc.
I'll suggest anything you can take with love. Its the thought that counts.:)
My parents take gifts for the kids like chocs, clothes, makeup etc and for their siblings they take household stuff that they can use like some kitchen appliance etc. They have also used clothing items, perfumes etc as presents, which i guess are the usual.
