I don't have enough professional experience to tell you whether people will step over you to get ahead or not (I've been told they will) but yes, it is extremely competitive alright, more so because of the recession. One thing I have learned (and didn't like) is that people who have references/contacts have an advantage over those who don't have any sources for *sifarish.
*What can you do? Work hard. Don't just do the best at what you're supposed to do but try to think outside the box, expand your horizons, differentiate yourself from the rest of the crowd. For example, how are you any different from the rest of the graduates? Apart from woking on your academic performance and extracurricular achievements, if you did a part time weekend course relevant to your degree, even that extra little bit will attract the employer's attention and might just land you the job.
Also, you have to be firm and get along with everyone without getting involved in workplace politics. Though, do unto others as you would have them do unto you DOES NOT always work. You just have to be wise when dealing with people.
Just keep applying to places for jobs like mad after Uni, something will come up :D
Well job applications for me are a bit different ( as a medical student) im garunteed to have a job out of uni, but from then on nothing is guaranteed! I think she was talking more about suceeding in the work place both professionally and personally and letting go of 'naiivity' with regards to how nice people actually are.
:) well this is what practical perspective is, survival of the fittest, in other words. To make sure you are not the dog being eater alive, you will have to be one who eats the other one alive. There is no third option.
:) well this is what practical perspective is, survival of the fittest, in other words. To make sure you are not the dog being eater alive, y*ou will have to be one who eats the other one alive. There is no third option*.
this is what I am coming to terms with :( I dont know how to 'eat other dogs' i could make sure I dont get eaten by being a non threat but not being the weakest, but thats not the way to success. sigh
If they try to suppress you, yes you have to fight for yourself by working even harder. You won’t have the option of kicking them out of the way, you’re going to have to deal with them every single day. So as I said in my first post, gotta stay away from workplace politics and focus on improving yourself. If you’re good at what you do, why would anyone want to let go of you regardless of how many people can’t stand you?
Its very true.....you have to be shrewed, vigilant and able spot the dogs (and *****es).......its really difficult to succeed without biting someone.....although possible...yet its quite difficult......
So this whole 'stay out of work politics business' does this mean never REALLY trusting anyone, not making good friends just making aquaintances?
And how do you spot the *****es? I mean some people are so good at being fake and in all honestly I always expect people not to be mean and want to step on me, this could possibly be my downfall.
(Un)fortunately, I've been back bitten by "very very nice" people even before I entered the professional world so I'm not as naive as I used to be when I was younger. Everything that glitters is not gold, it could be poopoo wrapped in gold metallic paper. I don't know if it's a good or bad thing to not trust people so easily but hey better be safe than sorry. I'd keep it formal at workplace, be friendly but wouldn't disclose any confidential details to anyone about personal/professional life. You do get to make great friends but you have to choose them wisely.
World is not such a bad place after all. You will find lots of folks who will be willing to help your achieve success.
Yes Some places of work are a war zones when it comes to office politics and then there are place which provide a nurturing environment. You will surely find one where you would love to go to work every workday. So do not be scared , jut be careful and on the lookout for right place to work at with right work environment.
This is what my personal tutor told me yesterday and told me I should be prepared for it once I leave uni and head into the big bad world.
To what extent have you found this to be true? and how do you make sure you are not the 'dog' that gets eaten alive!
It's very true!. At least my experience has taught me to try to be more smarter than rest of the world. And if you're not, then either you are going to be eating or eaten..
