There was some work going on the middle part of the arena, where gladiators were kept underground before sending them to the battles. That part was not accessible. There were no mock battles but plenty of mock gladiators outside to take photos with (useless). Also many guides available outside, you can talk to them and negotiate prices. I’ve never used any in my travels so far.
