Italy to set up uni in city by 2009
KARACHI: An Italian engineering and technical university is going to be established in Karachi, announced Prof. Bernardino Chiala, Vice Rector for Education Programmes, Politecnico di Torino, at a briefing held at a local hotel Tuesday attended by Italian Consul General in Karachi, Domenico Beninocasa.
Chiala said that Politecnico di Torino, the first technical university in Italy and ranked seventh in Europe, had signed an agreement with the Higher Education Commission (HEC). The Karachi campus would become functional by the end of 2009 with post-graduate classes starting at a provisional campus located at the Marine Academy from October 2008.
The campus would be located on a land measuring about 1,300 acres and will also be home to universities of France and South Korea. Chiala added that the campus would have a big technology park with privately owned company research centers and an incubator for high-tech companies. …
The new university’s chancellor is expected to be Italian, while the two vice rectors are going to be an Italian and a Pakistani. Initially, the majority of faculty members will be Italian, but as Pakistani teachers take up responsibility, the number of Italians would decrease.
The undergraduate course is going to be for three years, whereas the postgraduate degree can be attained in two years.
Javed Masood of the HEC also spoke at the occasion and added that eight other universities are also being set up in Pakistan with foreign collaboration. app
If i’m not wrong, it’s usually maintaining a university or a college is a big problem in Pakistan rather than building one!
