IMO, that need to read & understand “every” word is indicative of someone who has just gotten started with a heavy reading load. I’ve done my fair share of heavy academic reading over the past ten years and have gotten used to identifying the core from the fluff. This comes with experience and a speed-reading course can certainly help.
