IT Jobs in Canada...options..

Guppies,

I’ll be visiting Canada for a week (in first week of Dec). :alhamd: I currently have a good job in USA and I am with same company from last 5.5 years and I don’t see any turbulence here in near future but I just want to explore the options in Canada too (I am a permanent resident).

How do you guys rate the chances for a guy who has MS degree in computer science with 7+ years of USA experience (both in govt and pvt sector) and 2+ years of Pakistan experience?

I am currently working as and consider myself to be suitable for the post of Project Manager/Team Leader/Sr.Software Engineer with good domain knowledge of bio-informatics and other commercial systems.

How quick normally companies are in their recruitment process? Do I have enough time to lineup 2-3 interviews?

Re: IT Jobs in Canada...options..

First of all. December is like Ramadan for Christians. Business (other than product sales) are slowest compared to whole year. Even not considering that -
I don't think you can land 2-3 interviews when you are here. Your best bet is to actually start applying and scheduling interview before you get here.

In general, the pay for exact same job is considerably less than what you will get paid in States. Therefore, if you have decent job (lets say $95k USD / year) you will get like $50-$60k (CDN) / year for same job. Do note that dollars does seem to stretch a little more here than in US.

Now, I have said v.generalized statements - because we don't know where you are. States is so big and pay scale / benefits etc varies a lot accordingly.

Re: IT Jobs in Canada...options..

I am in Carolinas where cost of living is less as compare to NY or LA and so are the pays. for example

i was in LA before and 2 bed apt there was around 1400$ and almost the same 2 bed apt here in carolinas is around 800$ (thats around 7000$ per year diff right there)

Re: IT Jobs in Canada...options..

The cost of living in Toronto is pretty pricy. My BIL is doing a similar job to my husband but makes quite a bit less, and his housing and car costs in particular are a lot more. The market doesn't seem to be as dynamic there. He knows quite a few people with similar degrees who are currently unemployed or working in more menial jobs.

D6 .... since u'd be getting some senior level job, it may take them longer. It also depends on how desperately a company needs a person.
