It is Allah who erected the heavens without pillars that you [can] see; then He established Himself above the Throne and made subject the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. He arranges [each] matter; He details the signs that you may, of the meeting with your Lord, be certain.
[Qur’aan 13:2]
There are two understandings for the phrase “without pillars that you can see.”
According to Ibn Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) and Mujaahid it means that the heavens have been erected on pillars but we cannot see these pillars.
The second view, which is that of Qataadah, is that it means that Allah has erected the heavens without any pillars whatsoever and not being able to see them is further emphasis for their non existence.
“Each running [its course] for a specified term” has been explained by some scholars to mean until a known time which is the time when the world will come to an end, and the Day of Judgment will be established.
