It could only happen in San Francisco

San Francisco Hosts ‘Masturbate-A-Thon’

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - More than 100 men and women gathered in famously liberal San Francisco this past weekend for what organizers said was the city’s second annual public “Masturbate-a-Thon.”
Organizers said they have taken the event “from the sheets to the streets,” offering volunteers – 18 years or older – the opportunity to overcome their inhibitions in “a safe environment” and raise money for charity.

Horace Santry, 55, said the Friday night event was his first. “I have a lot of anxiety, but doing this among a group of like-minded people does make it easier,” he said.

Men and women ranging in age from the early 20s to the 50s, mingled at a local performing arts center in San Francisco’s South of Market district, known for artists, galleries and nightclubs, before getting down to business.

To the strains of soothing new-age music, the men and women – a number of them couples – were shown into rooms for men, women or both.

“This is an effort to counter centuries of censure, to make masturbation more fun and to make it more accessible,” said Thomas W. Laqueur, a professor of history at the University of California at Berkeley and author of the recent “Solitary Sex: A Cultural History of Masturbation,” in a telephone interview before the event.

The event is a fund-raiser for the local Center for Sex and Culture, a non-profit organization that provides sex education.

San Francisco Masturbate-a-Thons have raised more than $25,000 over the past five years, said Center co-founder Robert Lawrence.

The event has inspired others in several U.S. states and countries, from Alaska to Germany, in which participants raise money in the privacy of their homes.

If anyone here would even consider participating in such a thing, can you please try to explain WHY.

If anyone here would even consider participating in such a thing, can you please try to explain WHY.<<<

for Charity!!!!!!

mv, First rule of chairty: If you can do it for thyself, do it for thy neighbour too. Not everyone is selfish like you.:)

Sick people.:nono:

yup, can happen in stupid america only. others have minds to think and reject such crappy activities :-)

 That’s pathetic.

Hmm...I don't agree with whats going on here but the cause is good much like swimsuit or firemen calendars where the proceeds are donated to charitable institutions or the needy. Question is why not?

one word: STRANGE!

I don't think it's such a bad idea....If an inane activity like masturbating can raise money for charity..why not do it..and put all tht time and energy wasted on it to better use?

Hmmm, I guess not everything goes down the drains.

Now Charity organizations are under fire, because they take a load of money for themselves and pass a very minute part of it to the actual "deserving". So even your other 'money' will go down the drain as usual ;)

Well,

I would think something such as that or this should be really private.

No one elses business.

<~~~~ Last thing I would ever do to gather money for a cause.

Actually. Not even thinkable.

Yuck...where is the privacy?

So you would in privacy? Well, do it and send me the money so I could donate on your behalf.

Although there is a huge homosexual population in SF, I have to admit that SF is a wonderful city! Not only is it gorgeous, but the people are friendly too. :)

Strange things happen everywhere. Do you also have a problem with the kissing contest that goes on in Europe...can't remember what country it is in .... I think Italy...not too sure. Anyway, it is a contest, no charity or prizes involved (as far as I know). The gist of it is to see which couple can kiss for the longest. The block off a street and there are hundreds (if not thousands) of couples involved .... it goes on for hours! :)

I'd have no problem with the kissing contest being done in public provided that they were not masturbating as well.

BTW:
I agree the people of SF do act really friendly. Almost everybody seems to want to shake your hand....at a minimum. ;)

Alright. Enough dissing San Francisco :hoonh:

What do you guys have got? Haan? :stuck_out_tongue:
