ISTIKHARA - Has any one tried it?

I have been told that in times times of doubt or to help answer a difficult question
one should pray Istikhara namaz.

From what i have heard, the person’s heart gets inclination towards the answer after it. However is it a sin to perform the prayer and on receiving an answer (guidance)not follow it? Is the answer just a preference? a better way? a compulsion?

Re: ISTIKHARA - Has any one tried it?

i have done quite a few times. sometimes get clear signs (colors) and sometimes a very strong negative-positive feeling and sometimes nothing. but before i did my first istakhara, i made sure i become punctual in my namaz and started Quran. (though i am still quite unorganized)

i dont want to do something which I dont even know what and why i am doing it. so i wanted to make sure i did actually embrace Islam.

anyho, istakhara is not easy thing to do since its kind of like a lowest degree of Revelation. and if you read Aswa-e-Hasna of Prophet Muhammad PBUH and see things HE PBUH get to see-face while the process of getting wahi then you can actually imagine the intensity of the process.

Re: ISTIKHARA - Has any one tried it?

I am not sure if it is a sin when you not follow the istikhara but I do not see a point of doing istikhara if you already think you may not follow it.

I may be wrong but to me it seems like you want to do istikhara and follow it only if it agrees with what you want to do.

From the trasnlation of istikhara prayer: you are asking Allah to guide you and make something easy for you if it is meant to be good for you.
If you are asking Allah then let it be with Allah's will if He makes something easy for you

Re: ISTIKHARA - Has any one tried it?

if you do istikhara, then you do need to follow whatever the answer may be. You are asking for advice/answer from Allah, and if you recieve an answer, you should go for that since it is what is best for your situation.

I can;t say if it is a "sin" because I am unsure myself, but I do know that you must follow the outcomes of istikhara

Re: ISTIKHARA - Has any one tried it?

well salatul istakhara is made when you have to take a decision and you want Allah's guidance in it....scholars say that you might not necessarily get a dream....you could get one but basically you are to take a decision towards which your heart is inclined in which IA would lie your best for the life here and the hereafter....there is no sin in doing istakhara and following what your heart says...infact after doing istakhara inclination of your heart is the most reliable option you should go with....and whatever you decide after doing istakhara is in which lies your good and you would never regret the decision made....
I have been doing istakhara for the past few years for all my critical decisions and Alhamdulillah not a single time I thought I should decided otherwise.....there was thins one time when I did istakhara continuously and was still unable to come to a conclusion and I just went with one of the options and still it worked out excellent with no regrets :)

Re: ISTIKHARA - Has any one tried it?

it is not necessary that you need to be pious to do istakhar.
however, it is recommended that one should do his own Istikhara.

it is not necessary that you can see any dream. but you can do istakhara continuously till 7 day. or you can extend that period to more than 7.
a time will come when your mind will set on particular decision by its own.

Re: ISTIKHARA - Has any one tried it?

^it is best to istikhara for atleast seven day but if you dont have so much time (say for example you have to make a decision in next few hours) then just the two nafl of istikhara followed with the istakhara dua will be good enough and no matter what you decide, in it will lie your good IA :)

Re: ISTIKHARA - Has any one tried it?

Some of us friends were having a discussion over the topic which is why i put it up here. Many said that since your heart gets inclined towards it, you take that decision any way. So most of the times, there is no need to go against it.

As per my knowledge, Istikhara is a kind of guidance from Allah and more of clarification of what is best for you. It cannot be a compulsion since many a times even if the concerned person wants to follow it, he/she is unable to for some reason. e.g. If some student wants to decide whether he should go for a career in medicine or engineering; he ends up going for medicine since his parents wanted him to be a doctor even if Istikhara results were different.

Re: ISTIKHARA - Has any one tried it?

I did this before my wedding and alhumdulilah Allah paak made me feel strong and I felt that hubby was right for me...and alhumdulilah we are happy...

Re: ISTIKHARA - Has any one tried it?

What about doing istakhara for yourself vs. someone who's much more religious?
I did istakhara for an important decision regarding school a couple months back, along with my mother, and my bhabi. My mother and I both didn't feel anything, and thought I should go on with my decision. My bhabi also said to go on with it, however she felt "pereshaan" during the istakhara process, and didn't know what to make of it. Long story short, I went through with it, and halfway through had istakhara done again by a few pious family members. Each one of theirs came back negative. So my question is, why did this happen?

Re: ISTIKHARA - Has any one tried it?

You don't have to be "pious" to do istikhara. Plus, whose to decide who is good in Allah's eyes anyways. With that in mind, remember what's "halaal and haraam" along with Fards.
if you're going to skip all your salaah's, then do ur istikhara salaat and fall alseep while listening to music, then I wouldn't be too eager to get a response

Re: ISTIKHARA - Has any one tried it?

err .my understanding of istekhara is that i seek Allah talah to guide me and bring the best forward. And if something is not good enough,he will take it away by creating such circumstances. And i am saying that because my dreams are crazy(they say one has hints in dreams etc but not necessarily) and my thoughts not always make sense as i weigh certain situation.

Just not do it in times of confusion but i think we must make it a habit when we have something imp decision to take in hand.

Its like you have a task you are willing to do, do istekhara and if your heart feels right abt it, perform it with consistency. If its good enough you will be able to complete it and if not, Allah talah will create a better alternative for u.
