issue with wifi @ home

I moved into a new apartment recently and setup my wireless network using the same configuration as my old apartment (where it worked perfectly). Even though this new apartment is a wee bit smaller than the old one, my wireless signals have deteriorated considerably.

I’ve installed the access point in the bedroom with the cable modem and vonage device and I get a very weak signal in my living room which is only about 20-25 feet away.

I’ve tried bringing the access point into the hallway, and also tried to use a booster antenna in place of the standard one that comes with the access point. This only marginally improves the signals.

Does anyone have any tips for me to (re-)check any configuration settings OR to extend my network range by any other means – perhaps by using multiple network devices ?

My setup is currently based on wireless-G and sometimes, the best wireless speeds I get are only around 5 Mbps !! If I get back near the access point, I get between 36 and 54 Mbps.

Re: issue with wifi @ home

If u get proper signal in the bedroom then it couldn't be the router with the problem, config or otherwise. You probably have thicker walls or maybe electrical interference in them.

Re: issue with wifi @ home

probably signal interference. Not much you can do really.

Unlikely but sometimes can be drivers or recent software on laptop.

failing that get yourself some Linux based AP's my fav being the WRT54G although I hear some buffalo stations have very good TX performance. Anyway use DD-WRT or Tomato (my fav) to set up a WDS. Overkill I know but works.

Re: issue with wifi @ home

I assume you have tried switiching channels your AP runs off first?

Re: issue with wifi @ home

yeah I’ve already tried various channels on my AP.

I’m now leaning towards a powerline broadband bridge and wireless adapters in other rooms where access is spotty. The wireless AP will still be used in the bedroom where wireless access is fine.

Anyone else have any experience with powerline adapters? I’m thinking of this one:

Re: issue with wifi @ home

haaloo? anyone try any powerline networking products?

Re: issue with wifi @ home

That is basically acting as a WDS. Be warned it can cause a load of problems, even if using the same vendor products. I have not found anything which works better than a pair of WRT54G.

In the UK powerline adaptors are way too expensive. Dunno about Toronto.

Re: issue with wifi @ home

thanks for your help risc - appreciate it!

I bought a pair of powerline adapters and that's worked very well for me. It seems like the easiest way to scale up/down the network through the home.

Re: issue with wifi @ home

^^ I actually have a set sitting in my office but never used them. I've even forgotten what i ordered them for. :)

Re: issue with wifi @ home

I ran into the same issue not too long ago and it turned out that my new cordless phone were the problem. Changing the frequency on the phone did the trick.
