JERUSALEM (AP) – Israel’s central bank chief has applied to head the International Monetary Fund, the bank said Saturday, acknowledging that obstacles stand in his way.

Stanley Fischer has headed the Bank of Israel since 2005 and has held top jobs at the World Bank and at Citigroup Corp.

He has been widely credited with enabling the country to largely escape the global economic crisis. Unemployment in Israel is just over 6 percent, and the real estate sector is booming.

Last year, he was appointed to a second five-year term.

“An extraordinary, unexpected and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity has arisen, to run for the head of the International Monetary Fund, which I decided I wanted to do after many considerations,” Fischer said Saturday.

Despite Fischer’s achievements, the position may be a long-shot for the Zambia native. The post has traditionally gone to a European, and French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde has emerged as the front-runner.

Beyond that, the Bank of Israel said in a statement Saturday the IMF accepts candidates under 65 years old. Fischer is 67.

Fischer said he was applying knowing it is “a complex process and despite the potential barriers.”

Israeli Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz said Saturday he supported Fischer’s candidacy.

“The position fits Fischer like a glove,” he said.

The IMF’s last director, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, quit last month after he was accused of attempting to rape a New York hotel maid.

It won't make a difference for Pakistan except that being a jew he may ask for more interest on loans.

And as for anti-Israeli people in Pakistan, they will still be taking loans as allah ki taraf se imdaad.

Lets see what happens, even now America is virtually controlled by jews so I dont think it would impact anything

It would be best for Anti-Israeli Govts to not to opt for IMF support... this way they will be safer...

IMF has been dominated by Europeans in the past. No harm in looking for leaders from other regions. My understanding of IMF loans is they are predatory in nature. So better to stay away.

I hope this yahud gets the job so all muslims countries have more reason to leave the corrupted country destroying IMF

He is an economist first and foremost (the single and most defining requirement for a job to head the IMF), with no visible sign of politcs written in his resume. If a candidate has MERIT, which he does, he should be considered just like any other candidate.

^ muslims don't hate yahudis. They happen to dispise people who root for Israel in general (but not for India for some reason). Just saying though. Merit is Merit still.

merit for what an organisation that exploits and enslaves countries in south america, africa and asia. This organization does a thousands times more damage than the mafia you need a reality check dude IMF are evil sob's!

It's not like IMF puts a gun to the head of any head of state and says either u take the loan or u r history ...... It's their own deeds that drive them into IMF hands ..... BTW the banks in the socalled muslim countries operate in similar way with customers who can't pay their mortgage ..... it's just on a smaller scale ..... so don't blame the IMF ..... blame the PPL who run to them for help and then realise what a mess they've brought upon themselve and their own PPL

You don't know how the IMF works they do put gun to governments in fact they put machine gun. They tell what economic policies a state will use they say which projects they will spend money on they tell them which people should be in position of power.

So yes IMF is a criminal organisation which no country in world especially the muslims countries and also the poor people in africa and south america i feel for them also they should never touch IMF.

On your point about PPL, PML and others thieves i agree they also collaborate in taking these loans they signed paper work for loans and also should be blamed but come on you know these guys they are biggest thieves already you didn't need me to tell you that.

if you dont like them then dont go to them.
