A WELSH Labour MP who was shot at twice by Israeli soldiers during a UN-supervised visit has labelled his close call a ‘clear warning’.
Huw Irranca-Davies, Labour MP for Ogmore, came under fire during a cross-party trip to Gaza to visit the spot where a UK student was killed last year.
Speaking from the West Bank city of Hebron yesterday, Mr Irranca-Davies said: "They were extremely well-aimed warning shots and the message was very clear - ‘Get out of here now, we don’t want you telling people what is really going on here.’
“I firmly believe that it was not the intention of those firing to kill us.”
The group he is travelling with, which includes Liberal Democrat peer Baroness Northover and Tory MP Crispin Blunt, are in Israel to see the effect of Israel’s policy of demolishing Palestinian housing in Gaza.
"On the way back we wanted to see the site where Tom had been shot. As we walked towards the area there was a prolonged concert of machine gun fire in our direction.
"It was a clear warning shot so we withdrew to the jeeps.
“We were just about to get into it when two very well targeted shots were fired again, right above our heads.”
Speaking from Hebron yesterday, the former Swansea University lecturer said the incident was far from an isolated one.
He said: “The situation here is extremely volatile - people are under siege here.”
Mr Irranca-Davies has vowed the group will continue with their visit and vows he will not let Friday’s shooting drop when he returns home.
He said: "We reported the incident immediately by telephone to the Consulate General and have alerted the Israeli officials, informing them we will be taking the matter up with the appropriate authorities on our return.
“I will certainly be raising it on the floor of the Commons.”
Israelis shoot British Mps
Hmmm intresting the British MPs now know what it feels like to live under occupation although they only know a small fraction of what it feels like, they do not live there 24/7 all year round.
As for the israelis what can you say nothing new same old leopard that never changes its spots. Its time will come!
