HERZLIYA, Israel (Reuters) - An Israeli start-up has developed a processor that uses optics instead of silicon, enabling it to compute at the speed of light, the company said.

Lenslet said its processor will enable new capabilities in homeland security and military, multimedia and communications applications.

“Optical processing is a strategic competitive advantage for nations and companies,” said Avner Halperin, vice president for business development at Lenslet.

“Processing at the speed of light, you can have safer airports, autonomous military systems, high-definition multimedia broadcast systems and advanced next-generation communications systems.”

An optical processor is a digital signal processor (DSP) with an optical accelerator attached to it that enables it to perform functions at very high speeds.

“It is an acceleration of 20 years in the development of digital hardware,” Lenslet founder and Chief Executive Officer Aviram Sariel told Reuters.

The processor performs 8 trillion operations per second, equivalent to a super-computer and 1,000 times faster than standard processors, with 256 lasers performing computations at light speed.

It is geared toward such applications as high resolution radar, electronic warfare, luggage screening at airports, video compression, weather forecasting and cellular base stations.

Lenslet said its Enlight processor, unveiled at the MILCOM exhibition in Boston this month, is the first commercially available optical DSP.

“Optics is the future of every information device,” said Sariel

far cry as yet.

dont believe the hype.

^ Do you have another source of information?

i suppose that item was true. isreal is far ahead of the rest of the world when it comes to optical research n tech.
anyway that will b a major break through in tech n science for the man kind.

I know youre saying that just because they are israeli... Let this stubborn mullahnistic mentality go, and give credit where credit is due. This has nothing to do with religion, but science.

i think israelis were also working on a bio computer, ... any news on that guys !!

DNA computers, the cross over of machines to living things. Where will it end up going?

Israelly cmputers are like the Russians.

I'm saying this because theres a major infrastructure and investment into optical computation in my school, and a friend and neighbour of mine is very much involved in this field.

breakthroughs like these shake things up in a major way, and quickly.. this is something the whole field of optics has been striving for. and theres been no news of this over here atleast.

since the article is not technical, theres precious little that can be said about what they actually have done.

quantum computing used to be the promised land a couple of years ago, now its relegated to pure algorithmic discussions. Although there was a breakthrough recently..with the invention of the quantum storage device.

things like these gain currency then fizzle out. In the eighties there was this guy in India who proved P=NP and got a lot of coverage. Dont believe things until you read the proof in a research paper.

Adleman (of RSA fame) here at USC actually made a bio computer. That wasnt too succesful.

Anyone elser know about existing bio computers..and if they've been any good?

Interestingly, I came across this DARPA project for integrating machines with neural networks (real neural networks..human neural networks)..and vice versa. So for instance, while you could have prosthesis that moved like your hands..you could also have the first Borg.

As far as I know..universities were still bidding for the project..but its just scary the direction research is going these days.

There was this famous project in the University of Maryland (?) where they controlled a mouse through a remote control..controlling its brain.

Amazing stuff.

Yeah u can say that

But like russian cars they are build roughly. Crash like Migs (The ones India has) alot of times.
Also and soon will be calling them "urtey taboot"

Uh oh, the sky-corps again. As I said in the other thread, do some reading.

Those migs might have crashed due to bad piloting?

israel is small in area ,but is strong :hoonh:

Israel is strong because as Mahatir said "there r big hands helping it."

Thnx Babag from now on i will do reading.

:hehe: Not surprising
