Hitting at the chain is the main point...you disable the tank...

Look at the video where multiple missiles hit the tank. If the missile can make it inside the tank, not only will it disable the tank, but also shred everything inside (including the crew) apart.
That is why multiple missiles are fired at the same tank - one or two missile cracks open the armor, the following missiles reach inside and shred everything apart.

Military personnel casualties have a different side-effect than disabling a tank.
