I think if you look at some of the Uranium calculators you begin to realize that what WISE exposes is that chronic long term exposure to Uranium Ore in the mining process over the course of many years can signigicantly increase health risks. We are talking 20 years of daily exposure to mines, mine waste products and Radon vapor. This can increase the possibility of cancer by 5 to 10% over backround levels. This is measurable and predictable. However, other studies showed an increase in Lung Cancer, except they did not parse for Smokers, who can significantly increase the probablility.

If you look in the section entitled “military uses”, you will see references to inflamatory article after article. Then you begin to see study after study by countries who participated in peacekeeping missions in Bosnia/Kosovo where lots of DU was used, and where soldiers had significant exposure while cleaning up destroyed taks for example. The countries who sent soldiers tested the soldiers urine, and found no significant accumulation of Uranium of any kind. Nordic countries have such a high Uranium content naturally occuring in the ground, that some groups of soldiers actually showed a *decline *after serving for six months in warzones.

Don’t believe all that? Well, the World Health Organization did a study in 2001. They basically said, 1) Don’t play around destroyed tanks. 2) Destroyed Tanks should be hauled away to junk yards 3) Don’t hold DU chunks in your pockets 4) They found no evidence of ground water contamination, but recommended further testing just in case. They raised no cause for immediate alarm.

If people just read this stuff instead of fear mongering, they might be a little better off. DU has become a cause celeb on the internet, and because the mere thought of radioactivity makes people feel creepy, it gets a huge reaction among the ignorant and ill-informed. Whats more, when you couple peoples fear of radioactivity with the politically charged admosphere around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, you have some pretty potent propaganda. Leave it to an ass-wipe trash journalist like Fisk to whip something up. Oh well.

Though I do not support you all the time but I will agree this was a nice educated response and it did cause me to actually research somehwat on DU than go along with the tide of emotions. DU may not be harmful from a radioactive perspective short term however it definitely has harmful effects because of its toxicity. DU is among the list of doubtful or prohibited elements to use in weaponry.

Well, that is complete speculation. Infact, it is massive speculation that only Fisk is capable of..... The easiest explaination is that waste Uranium was used for the tip of a bunker busting bomb, and it was not totally depleted.

Only Muslim paranoia can have the Israelis creating new micro-nukes, which no one has ever witnessed or seen evidence of or even speculated about. Somehow you guys manage to make the Israelis about ten feet tall, and simultaneously condemn them on a whisp of evidence.

muslims are under reacting to all this weaponry and events. the rightful response/counter measures are not being made at the correct speed.
the possibilities of uranium based micro weapons have been around a long time. before my time but not before yours, stay with the pace old man.
israel is two foot two because it squeezed in and is rightfully condemned as the most vile state ever to take to the earth. this not a reaction to every news story but a general always and forever statement. a blot on the middle east landscape.
the studies you point to barely examine the effects of depleted uranium bullet shells. everyone should know that the effects of uranium gamma exposure are not wholly known as yet, so any studies into small amount of radiation which show little ill effects can only confirm that amount of exposure is less harmful in the short term. for higher amounts, research chernobyll. interestingly chernobyll is still killing today and not just in its immediate or neighbouring areas.
i dont entirely disagree with the notion that small amount of radiation are of little harm.
for proof of scientists not knowing the uranium rays as they should, research on effects to people living close to nucleur power stations! these are supposed to be shut tight of any possible leakage of radiation, but the residents of the nearest village will show huge abnormallities.
if you want more nucleur devices, hey thats fine by me too. im all for it. anyone who wants to play, has to have them anyway. **if israel wanna taste one or two keep doing what your doing. **theres a few ready for you right now, more to follow.

UN experts have found no evidence to support a press report that Israel used depleted uranium (DU) munitions during the July-August conflict in Lebanon, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has said.
“The samples taken by the UNEP scientists show no evidence of penetrators or metal made of DU or other radioactive material,” UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner said in a statement Tuesday.
“In addition, no DU shrapnel, or other radioactive residue was found. The analysis of all smear samples taken shows no DU, nor enriched uranium nor higher than natural uranium content in the samples.”
In October, the British daily The Independent said samples of soil taken from two bomb craters in Lebanon showed high radiation levels, suggesting that uranium-based munitions had been used.
