Israel successfully tests anti-Iraninan-missile system

Let’s see what Iran says after this. They have been talking tough for the last few weeks.

JERUSALEM, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Israel carried out a successful test of its missile-interceptor system on Friday when an Arrow II missile downed an incoming rocket designed to simulate an Iranian Shahab-3, the defence ministry said.

The test, the latest in a series, came a day after Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Israel could not accept the emergence of a nuclear-armed Iran, though he steered clear of threatening military action against the Islamic Republic.

Israeli security sources have said that the Arrow II system developed jointly with the United States is aimed at boosting the Jewish state’s preparedness against what it sees as a threat of a future missile strike from Iran.

The Shahab-3, which Iran says has a range of 2,000 km (1,250 miles), is seen by Israel as the main weapon which would be used to target its territory.

Tehran insists its nuclear programme is for energy needs only and that the Shahab is intended as a deterrent. Israel is widely believed to be the Middle East’s only nuclear power.

Israel’s Defence Ministry said the test was to scrutinise the Arrow II’s improved intercept capabilities. A land-based Arrow successfully destroyed an incoming aircraft-fired missile simulating a Shahab-3, a Defence Ministry source said.

The source said the target missile had a trajectory more closely resembling the Iranian missile than in previous tests.

The Arrow is the world’s only system capable of intercepting missiles at atmospheric level, an advantage considered key to prevent devastating fallout from non-conventional warheads.

Independent experts estimate the Arrow’s success rate at 95 percent but some doubt whether it would be reliable against a salvo of Shahab-3s.

“Israel, and not only Israel, cannot accept a situation in which Iran has nuclear weapons,” Sharon told reporters on Thursday. “We are also taking all the necessary preparations to be ready for this kind of situation.”

But Sharon reaffirmed Israel’s support for diplomatic efforts, led by the United States and the European Union, to curb a uranium enrichment programme in Iran, a country that has called for the destruction of the Jewish state.

Re: Israel successfully tests anti-Iraninan-missile system

India has to buy Arrow II to intercept Shaheen II, wouldN't you say?

Re: Israel successfully tests anti-Iraninan-missile system

Anti Missile System is the biggest gimick in the defence industry...anybody who claims to have developed a system with a high, not absolute, rate of hit is lying through its teeth...The only takers for the Israeli system are the dupeable Indians, all too eager to throw the hard earned money of its improvished masses to make Uncle's Pimp Israel happy...

Re: Israel successfully tests anti-Iraninan-missile system

whatever happened to greatest Patriots or whatever it was that US developed before Gulf war ... the anti-missile thingie? these are just toys to fool you, they fooled Arabs into buying a bulk of them by showing the 3-6 "successful" interceptions but hid the tens of failed interceptions.

Re: Israel successfully tests anti-Iraninan-missile system

they do work but the margin for error is miniscule. The warheads and missiles have a combines speed of many mach. The target is also tiny so not easy to get a intercepting missile anywhere near close proximity. Maybe it would be to an acceptable level if radar technology got much better but I see it as an evolutionary thing take quite some generations before it becomes reliable.

Re: Israel successfully tests anti-Iraninan-missile system

You just want India to not buy Arrow II so you can land Shaheen II anywhere in India bindhaas and kill those jahil hindus.

Re: Israel successfully tests anti-Iraninan-missile system

Since when Bharatis consult Pak4ever during weapons buying program?

Best regards

Re: Israel successfully tests anti-Iraninan-missile system

None of these Israeli systems have ever been tested against real ballistic missiles, other then old 80's Scud Missiles & Unmanned UAV's which simulate as Ballistic Missiles.

Iran's missile inventory is much more advanced & sophisticated then the Scuds.

Re: Israel successfully tests anti-Iraninan-missile system

Waste of money. Those anti-missile systems won’t be able to intercept anything flying 100s of KM above the ground (in space) (normal altitude of a Ballistic Missile). The only thing they may be capable of shooting down are airplanes which are within range, but only if the Pakistani Airplane’s Chaff Grenades fail to launch or other technical difficulties.

Re: Israel successfully tests anti-Iraninan-missile system

Forget PAC-3, Arabs were sold old WWII trucks in Gulf War 1 and they bought it. Saudis were so pissed in their pants that they allowed the US troops in fear of Iraq (so ironic as how the wahabbi “caretakers” of Islam had to make excuses for inviting non-muslim US troops :hehe: also the reason OBL started hating sodis) when independent satellite photos showed that there were no tracks of any vehicle / tanks moving towards Sodi arabia (it is said that even now WWII tracks of the battle between germans and allies can still be seen in deserts of n. africa!!!).

Maybe it is that the illegal thug regimes are so paranoid that their people hate them that they thought that maybe MAYBE even some portion of the population might actually join Saddam against them???

Re: Israel successfully tests anti-Iraninan-missile system

Shooting down a/c is not that hard especially when you have one of the best SAM systems in the world (india has russian and shot down Pak B-57s as far back as 1971).

Remember it was mainly the Egyptian SAMs (though egyptian af did learn from the 1967 war and improved itself) that ended up destroy 180+ israeli jets in the yom kippur war!!!

Re: Israel successfully tests anti-Iraninan-missile system

Btw, shooting a ballistic missile is easier than say a cruise missile as ballistic missile follow a rather set pattern of going high in atmosphere and then reenter the atmosphere before hitting the target (terminal stage; US is working on hitting missile when it is in the mid stage above the atmosphere) unlike a cruise missile which can zigzag and fool the SAMs radar (example, the iraqi silkworms that ended up on a kuwaiti mall, though empty, was undetected by the kuwaiti Patriot batteries).

Also, one must also remember that Arrow will be better since it is being designed for missiles while Patriots were like the SA-2s or SA-3s (western style) to intercept enemy planes!

Re: Israel successfully tests anti-Iraninan-missile system

So, u want to compare 60’s tech. with modern day weapons?

If the SAM guides itself through the emission of heat, the Chaff can make things difficult for the missile. If it guides itself on the emission of radar waves, then it will go through the chaff, uninterrupted.

Re: Israel successfully tests anti-Iraninan-missile system

Have they ever tested any of these systems against real ballistic missiles, other then Scuds? They use UAV’s to simulate a BM which I think is stupid.

& correct me if I’m wrong, but silkworm is an OLD anti-ship Cruise Missile.

Re: Israel successfully tests anti-Iraninan-missile system

UAVs are good for detecting the radars (as in case of egypt which opened its radar and fired SAMs in turn giving away its location and Israeli planes pounce on that chance and destroyed 70-80 SAM batteries).

I know about silkworm but i was just making a point about the evading nature of cruise missiles!!!

And about SAM systems, do you think they are still stuck in the past that chaffs / flares will easily fool them???
If it were true, then no nation would be buying / deploying them.. :expressionless:
