Israel Says They Want 'Assad' To Stay In Power

Re: Israel Says They Want ‘Assad’ To Stay In Power

The goals of Free Syrian Army were commendable. They were looking for a democratic Syria and oust a dictator. This is how it should be. Democracy should be everywhere in the Middle East. Not just Syria but also Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, etc.

West did not interfere because Russia is the biggest supporter of socialist government of Baath regime. It is such a strong supporter that it is now willing to provide S-300 missiles to Syria. These missiles will make any air attack on Syria from Israel or America worthless. This is an example to show how far Russia is willing to go to protect Syrian government. And this is the reason the West could not interfere directly in the conflict.

However, the West did allow free flow of money and backing of FSA by Middle Eastern countries like Saudis and Qatar. West also helped Qatar host the government-in-exile of FSA. America has been donating millions of dollars to it. And it has been ignoring war crimes committed by FSA. Also, US has brought resolutions to interfere directly in the conflict but China and Russia have bulldozed them every time.

So the West did help FSA as much as it could muster with the opposition from countries like Russia and China.

A covert program to train rebel fighters, which State Department officials here were not prepared to discuss, has also been under way.According to an official in Washington, who asked not to be identified, the **C.I.A.**since last year has been training groups of Syrian rebels in Jordan.

Britain is planning more substantial nonlethal aid, which could include vehicles, bulletproof vests and night vision equipment, according to an American official.
