Israel has changed the Gaza Strip into a prison for Palestinians where life is “intolerable, appalling and tragic,” a UN human rights envoy said on Tuesday.

"Gaza is a prison; and Israel seems to have thrown away the key, " John Dugard, UN special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory, told a session of the Human Rights Council.

From a human rights perspective, the situation in Gaza “has deteriorated each year until the present time, which is intolerable, appalling, tragic - call it what you will - for the ordinary Palestinian,” he said.

The South African lawyer, who has been a special UN investigator since 2001, repeated earlier accusations that Israel is breaking international humanitarian law with security measures which amount to “collective punishment.”

“What Israel chooses to describe as ‘collateral damage’ to the civilian population is in fact indiscriminate killing prohibited by international law,” he said.

He also mentioned Israel’s destroying in June of the only domestic power plant in Gaza, causing power cuts. Israeli tanks and bulldozers also have destroyed houses, schools and farm lands.

According to the envoy, besides Israel, the United States, Canada and the EU should also be blamed, as they “have contributed substantially to the humanitarian crisis by withdrawing funding not only from the Palestinian Authority but also the Palestinian people.”

He said the United Nations and all its members states should also bear responsibility for the humanitarian crisis in occupied Palestinian territories.

If the international community cannot recognize what is happening in occupied Palestinian territories and take some action, "they must not be surprised if the people of the planet disbelieve that they are seriously committed to the promotion of human rights, " Dugard said.

why was the intifada2 ever allowed to take place. the answer is zionists see no place for palestinians in that part of the world. i think everyone will eventually, if not already, find this to be the real cause of all tension between muslim and non muslim people. its a disgrace. if this needs fighting for then people to that fighting will be found - very easilly. profound evil against profound good:)

If the "mainstream" Israeli public is really "moderate" then they should not have occupied an inch of Palestine in the first place.
And not just muslims, but everyone with live conscious would understand why this fascist regime has no right to exist. Even many Jews understand that.

When you get attacked and are threatened with annhiliation, you fight back. Israel fought back and the arabs retreated, west bank and gaza became occupied lands..

those lands could have been given back to the palestinians just like sinai was to egpyt. but the PLO chose the path of terror, which killed israeli civilians and brought hardliners into the israeli political arena such as ariel sharon

and with this kind of rhetoric, just proves why israel must take pro-active actions against these terrorists such as hamas and hezbollah

since you dont care about them, want to wipe them off the face of the earth then why should they care when they send their tanks into gaza and west bank to root out terrorists

Gaza faces bleak Ramadan

The Palestinians are reportedly facing its toughest Ramadan since the peace compromise accorded in Oslo in 1993. U.N. authority Hassan Mekded stressed that the residents of Gaza were subject to the most serious crisis in the last 13 years, and might face a hunger crisis.

South African law professor Prof. John Dugard, the special rapporteur for the United Nations on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories, has written in a report to the UN General Assembly that there is “an apartheid regime” in the territories “worse than the one that existed in South Africa.”

As an example, Dugard points to the roads only open to settlers, from which Palestinians are banned.

“Israel violates international law as expounded by the Security Council and the International Court of Justice and goes unpunished. But the Palestinian people are punished for having democratically elected a regime unacceptable to Israel, the US and the EU,” Dugard said.

we can see 'some' sensible intent on your part merc but the facts and points you mention by no means will bring us closer to peace. lets face it, if israel continues to exist in its present format then im sure you can see that there will be huge number of people apposed to this. the fact remains that palestinians(muslims) have an unquestionable right to live in between lebanon in the east all the way to egypt in the west. israel has forced itself into that position without ever managing to get acceptance from its neighbours or muslim inhabitants. this is the ideology which is driving suspicion between muslims and the rest of the world. its the source of great anger, and any peacedeal which overlooks the palestinian right will continue to keep the fire burning.

everyone knows the dangers involved but backing away from this political stance is not going to happen by any amount of force.
