Israel kills Hamas leader, militants call off truce

By Nidal al-Mughrabi

GAZA (Reuters) - Israel killed Hamas political leader Ismail Abu Shanab in a missile strike on Thursday, two days after a suicide bombing in Jerusalem, and Islamic militant groups called off a seven-week-old old ceasefire.

The collapse of the truce, agreed by militant factions under international pressure, could sink a U.S.-backed “road map” peace plan aimed at defusing a 34-month-old uprising and creating a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza by 2005.

the never ending cycle goes on. now Israel takes revenge for the revenge, then Palestinians will take revenge for revenge for revenge etc.

Militants call off truce? I assume they were keeping their truce when they let the suicide bombing occur. Or, is the truce officially called off now?

Kick both Israelis and Palestinians out of the territory, and let the Native American Indians live there in peace.

I believe it was Israel who broke the truce when they killed a leader earlier.

Last week Israel went to arrest Sidr and he refused to surrender which prompted a firefight that led to his death. He planned suicide attacks against Israel before and was thought to be planning more. Hamas attacked on Aug 12 with a pair of suicide bombers.

I say we evict all humans from the area and turn the place into a wildlife preserve..

Does anyone seriously believe that Hamas wanted to be part of a truce anyway? Do you really think that they could have honored a truce for more than a nanosecond?

That Sharon is a smart cookie. Now he can focus his military efforts of Hamas, while not be seen as attacking the whole of the PA. Next target, Arafat.

good that truce is over. isreal was never bound to that truce and were constantly targetting palestinian leaders and civiliand, who btw were all mistakenly killed in gun fires. yeah we'll have ppl killed on palestinian side but as the same time isrealis will also know its not easy to live on someone else land. they will pay high price for stealing this land. :~)

Same has been said about Israel. Nobody actually believed that truce will hold for long and peace will be lasting, I wonder why did that drama of peace was played?

^My point indeed. They'll never live in peace , and are simply wasting land. Its a stupid game of "I tricked you, now you trick me" . Send the Israelis and Palestinians packing and move in the Native Americans. Its about time we respected them.

^hmmmm Why American Indians why not Australian Aboriginal? :)

heh.. yeah.

Better yet, i say we get rid of all these male politicians (Sharon and Arafat in particular), and promote someone like Ashrawi.

This is a chronological arrangement of some events that led up to the truce being called off, (starting with 27th June).

both paletinians and israelis should be settled in kashmir they may
live in peace there .

So everyone agrees neither Palestinians or Israelis deserve the land, and aboriginals should get it. If only real life politics were so easy.

Thank you Nadia for the link, it does expose the sincerity of Israel and its commitment for peace.

You’re welcome, Changez. Of course Israel was sincere in its intent towards peace - how can you even doubt that? Their sincerity is well illustrated by their actions on 8 August when they killed two Hamas “militants”, and six days later killing another Islamic Jihad member. Is it any wonder that the truce was called off exactly a week later.

Didn't know that cease fire meant Israel wasn't allowed to arrest know murders.

They don't just "arrest", they kill them and often permanently demolish their family's houses in the process.

rockets/missiles usually don't arrest criminals, unless you tie a soldier on the rocket who cuts his rope to drop close to criminal to grab him :)

Some insight into the actual zionist strategy.
“Sharon certainly does
have a plan: to protect Eretz
Yisrael, avoid returning any territories and
make sure the settlements stay where they are.
Everything else is tactics.”
This has ALWAYS been the case, nothing new, just that mainstream media and US (and not only) politicians do not want to acknowledge this fact.

"Everything else is tactics

By Aluf Benn

But despite the internal
contradictions, confusion and
general impotence in the face
of Palestinian terrorism, one
must not think the Sharon
government lacks strategy and
direction. The arguments about
Sharon not having a plan are
nonsense. Sharon certainly does
have a plan: to protect Eretz
Yisrael, avoid returning any territories and
make sure the settlements stay where they are.
Everything else is tactics.

Sharon did not invent this policy. His
predecessors did the same, under the cover of
“surrendering to a handful of settlers.” What
surrender? It would be better to speak of
devotion, or a loving embrace. Only the system
has changed. Shamir simply said “no.” Rabin
made Arafat “make order in Gaza” but refused to
evacuate settlements, building them bypass
roads. Peres postponed until after the
elections, Netanyahu squabbled with Washington.
Barak dispersed virtual proposals meant to
“expose the true face” of the Arabs and present
them as rejectionists, while the construction
was accelerated in the settlements. The trick
worked on the Syrian front, and the Golan was
dropped from the agenda, but Arafat rebelled
and went to war against Israel.

Sharon was afraid that after Barak’s proposals,
Israel would find it difficult to hold onto the
territories in negotiations, so he made every
effort to avoid negotiations. Even when he
promised “painful concessions in the birthplace
of the Jewish people,” he gradually toughened
the opening conditions for those talks: a
cessation of violence, multi-dimensional
reforms, a different leadership, dismantling
the terror infrastructure and now killing or
exiling Arafat.
