This is interesting on so many levels. On one side you have Iran and Russia are backing Assad’s regime and on the other side Saudis, US, Israel and other gulf states are supporting rebels in Syria…and at the same time US are friendly arab states are bombing rebels in Syria and Iraq. So what is going on here?

Israel’s weekend helicopter attack in Syria, which killed five members of Hezbollah, including top leaders of their anti-ISIS movement, also killed an Iranian general, according to the Iranian media.

The slain Iranian had previously been reported as an “adviser,” but Iranian media today identified him as Gen. Mohammed Allahdadi, who was heading to Quneitra to inspect the defenses of the Assad government there.

Also among the slain were Mohammed Issa, the Hezbollah commander for all operations against ISIS and, perhaps most significantly, Jihad Mughniyeh, the son of a former Hezbollah military leader.

The attack is a serious blow to anti-ISIS operations in Syria, as the Assad government has increasingly relied on Hezbollah fighters, led by Issa, to resist the jihadists’ expansion deeper into their territory, and has sought Iranian expertise on defending their territory against offensives.

Hezbollah’s official news channel warned Israel the attack could “lead to a costly adventure that will put the Middle East at stake,” but while most Israelis expect retaliation for the attack, few expect it to snowball into an outright war.

Israeli officials are claiming that Mughniyeh was planning to attack the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, though many are doubting this claim, and analysts say they don’t believe it was a targeted assassination so much as Israel seeing a group of Hezbollah fighters in a convoy and deciding to attack them.

The butcher Assad was very happy to let ISIS grow, and was not even bombing them till recently.

All so they could be the main opposition, and he could claim to be fighting Islamic extremists.

Retaliation for Israeli attack on Hezbollah was swift. Just heard on ARY TV that Hezbollah attacked Israeli military convoy killing 15 soldiers and 2 of Israeli Air ports got closed. I am still looking for confirmation regarding airport, but news from some sources is that 4 Israeli soldiers got killed and several injured, though there are also news that at least 15 soldiers got killed.

IDF and Hezbollah exchange fire on Israeli-Lebanese border; 15 Israeli soldiers killed

The Daily Star reports that 30 shells fired from Israel hit south Lebanon close to the border.

Reuters followed with news that Lebanon fired an anti-tank guided missile at an IDF convoy in Northern Israel. Hezbollah has since claimed responsibility for the attack.

“At 11:25 (0925 GMT) this morning, the Quneitra martyrs of the Islamic Resistance (Hezbollah) targeted an Israeli military convoy in the Shebaa Farms composed of several vehicles which was transporting several Zionist soldiers and officers,” Hezbollah said in a statement broadcast on the group’s Al-Manar television channel, reports AFP.

“There were several casualties in the enemy’s ranks,” it said.

Reuters, quoting a military source, said Israeli helicopters were deployed after the anti-tank missile struck the vehicle and the army was checking whether there had been any attempt to abduct one of the soldiers.

Sources close to Hezbollah told the Beirut-based al-Mayadeen that at least 15 Israeli officers have been killed after Hezbollah fighters attacked a convoy of military vehicles, reports Maan News.

A spokeperson from UNIFIL announced that a UN peacekeeper was killed in the crossfire.

However, Israel is reporting that only four Israeli soldiers have been killed.

Mortar bombs hit Israeli military positions in Golan Heights, though no casualities have been reported.

Tensions have been high over the last ten days along the border following Israeli attacks on Golan Heights.

The Lebanese Army and U.N. peacekeepers intensified their patrols along the Blue Line on the border with Israel Monday as tensions mounted over Israel’s weekend strike on Syria’s Golan Heights which killed six Hezbollah members and a senior Iranian commander.

Hamas praised Hezbollah Wednesday for its attack on Israeli soldiers, Army Radio reported.

“We feel that this action was proof that the Zionist enemy is weak and fragile,” one of Hamas’s spokesmen said of the attack earlier in the day that injured several IDF soldiers and hit a house on the Lebanese border.

Israel shelled southern Lebanon earlier today.
