If you question why Israel conducts searches upon Palestinian’s cars, this is why.
A van containing explosives was caught Tuesday evening adjacent to the Green Line, within Israeli territory. The van was caught west of Taibeh, not far from Umm al-Fahm, after security forces obtained intelligence reports regarding terrorists’ attempts to infiltrate Israel.
Border Policemen stopped the vehicle, and four people who were in the car fled the scene. Policemen conducted searches for two of the men in areas controlled by the Palestinian Authority. The other two suspects escaped to the vicinity of Umm al-Fahm.
According to an initial investigation, the car license plates were counterfeit. Police sappers arrived at the scene, and safely detonated the explosive device, comprised of about **300 kilograms ** of explosives as well as gas canisters.
The security establishment is not ruling out the possibility that the suspects who fled the car were armed or carrying explosives belts.
When asked how the suspects were able to flee the scene, Northern District commander Yaakov Borovsky said, “This is a fact that must be checked.” He went on to say that the fact that the suspects were “compelled to flee the car before security forces reached it averted a disaster.”
This was the second explosive device found in the area this week. A routine police search in the area conducted on Sunday detected a car containing an explosive device. The driver of the car, a Palestinian who acquired Israeli citizenship, was arrested and transferred to the Shin Bet for an interrogation.
